DOUBLE 21 FOR DIONI

27 Nov 2010
Striker Dioni is living a sweet moment on his career; in one month he will be 21 and is already the 21st player that debuts with the first squad after the foundation of Abegondo. However, only one of these 21 kids is currently a starter at Depor.

It’s a key moment for youngster Dionisio Emanuel Villalba ‘Dioni’; he just arrived during the summer and three months later is already the Pichichi at Deportivo B and already debuted at Primera División, which is the dream of any young player pilgrimaging through the pitches of Segunda B. On the past week he made a new step forward as he debuted as starter with the first team, just one month before turning 21 (December 21).

That number seems to be the lucky one for the Andalusian striker, because back on September he became the 21st player that’s promoted from Fabril in order to play an official match with Deportivo, this after he replaced Adrian at minute 66 of the visit to Villarreal FC.

Abegondo was founded on May 1st, 2003; since then 21 youngster had the luck to be picked to the first team and play at the elite of Spanish football; the first one was striker Xisco; the Majorcan and midfielder Carlos Pita were the only ones that made the jump under the supervision of Javier Irureta.

Later Joaquín Caparrós arrived and five youngsters enjoyed of a chance: winger Iván Carril, striker Senel, playmaker Iago Iglesias, striker Rubén Rivera and central defender Adrian López ‘Piscu’. Curiously, these five players and the duo that debuted with Irureta already left the club, all of them by the back door, with the exception of Xisco, who left €8 million behind as he was transferred to Newcastle United.

Within the last four years, the number of promotions has been increased as fourteen Fabril’s members saw the light at the first team , all under the supervision of Miguel Ángel Lotina:  central defender Chapi, keeper Fabricio, right-back Laure, central defender Juanan, striker Lassad, playmaker Iván Pérez, keeper Manu, playmaker Juan Dominguez, striker Añón, midfielder Dani, central defender Rochela, right/left-back Seoane, left-back Raúl and striker Dioni.

Of this last list, eleven players still linked with the club, including Iván Pérez, who is currently loaned at Ponferradina. And of all this long list of twenty-one youngsters, only two were starters in the last official match against Malaga FC; Seoane and the mentioned Dioni, though it should be emphasized that Dioni played with the squad due to the injuries of Lassad and Riki, actually he is returning to the B squad for this weekend, which should indicate that the formula of Abegondo is working, but still needs time in order to have a deeper impact at the first team.

Meanwhile, Dioni was giving to reporters his impression on the project of Abegondo, “It’s good to see the coaching staff trusting on the youth teams. When I signed for Depor I knew that in the year after they allowed the debut of six or seven players. That fact encouraged me to make the trip here.”

Finally, Lotina himself was talking of the current state of Depor’s youth system, ”Depor is producing very good players, which indicates that we are working very well at Abegondo; not only at the B squad, but also since Cadetes level. Fabril is currently playing with two central defenders from Juvenil A [Uxio & Ínsua]. Yes, it is suffering on the league, but it will be a success for the future. These players are learning. Also to mention that Juvenil A is playing well; so, I think we are in the right direction.”
