EUROPE OR PERMANENCE?

09 Dec 2010
The good streak of Deportivo has meant to cut the distance with the top six places, while relegation is each day a more remote possibility. But is this situation for real?

The latest victory over Hercules CF has left Deportivo standing five points below the Europa League places, while relegation is now seven points below the Galicians. With only two matches remaining in the year, the current situation means that Depor can’t end 2010 in relegation, but in the other hand it could end sixth at the standings.

Although it is a remote possibility since it will need s series of combinations, starting with adding two straight victories against Atletico Madrid and Sporting Gijón and then to see Real Sociedad, Mallorca, Getafe, Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao not winning any of the two remaining matches. But the question that emerges at this point of the season is: Is Europe a real target or just a mirage?

And it’s that the season has been confusing for the fans, because the picture was complete different within the first eight matchdays. Depor was 18th at the liga table after the first eight encounters and was giving a terrible impression, having the worst scoring record in la liga and been the second worst defense in the competition

Everything changed starting at matchday 9 and as Depor trashed RCD Espanyol at the Riazor, since that day the Galicians have added thirteen of the eighteen points in dispute, and within the period the team now represents the third best side in la liga, just surpassed by the impressive run of Real Madrid and Barcelona

Maybe the most surprising change is the number of goals scored by Deportivo, because the team of Lotina has tripled the mark of the first eight matches, actually Depor is the sixth best offense since matchday 9, only surpassed by Barcelona (13), Real Madrid (13), Real Sociedad (11), Villarreal (11) and Atletico Madrid (10), and even above other clubs with bigger names in the striking line like Valencia or Sevilla (both six goals scored in the period).

But what has been the key is the defense, because Depor has only allowed two goals within the last six liga encounters, number only matched by Barcelona FC. Definitely, the best product from the “famous” system with five defenders.

Regardless the question if Depor will end up looking to Europe rather than relegation, it will depend on the coming matches, and it’s that of the last five games to end the first round, Depor still has to face Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona and even Athletic Bilbao, side that’s also trying to get into European positions, therefore the picture will be clearer at the end of the first round, probably at that point it will be possible to determine if Depor is an aspirant to Europe or just another club trying to survive in la liga.
