CLOSER TO THE PIT

08 Feb 2011
Deportivo is the second worst team in 2011 and is now only one point above the relegation zone; it’s a critical moment on the season as the Primera clubs are starting to define their final positions at the standings.

Sorrow and concern in La Coruña after the last two visits of Deportivo; at Real Zaragoza the team of Lotina showed an alarming lack of ideas in attack, and the 0-1 loss put the team back into the fight for the permanence; it seemed that Depor was reaching the bottom of its performance on the season, but somehow the team surpassed that low point with a terrible presentation at Getafe FC, this time joined by a big score (1-4), which also was the third worst defeat on the season after the ones against Real Madrid (1-6) and Barcelona (0-4).

Now, Depor presents a poor mark of only four points added in the year 2011 (six games played); it is the second worst record at Primera División, only above the one of Hércules FC (3). For this reason the Galicians are now only one point above the relegation zone, which meant to waste an advantage of eight points achieved after the 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at the start of the year.

The fight for the permanence:

The permanence is calculated in 42 points; therefore Deportivo needs 20 more points in order to secure the continuity at Primera División. And witnessing the poor performance of the Galician team playing away from home, it seems clear that Depor has to base the quest for salvation at the Riazor, place where the Galicians still has to dispute nine more matches.

A problem is that four of those nine future rivals are currently occupying the top-six positions: Villarreal, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and Valencia CF, while a fifth visiting team to the Riazor, Atletico Madrid, is trying to enter into this exclusive group of clubs.

Meanwhile, within matchdays 27 and 32, Depor will face four straight matches at home against rivals trying to avoid the abysm: Real Sociedad, UD Levante, RCD Mallorca and Racing Santander. Those matches will be disputed between March and the first week of April, and should be understood as the most important moment on the season.

Another of the keys is the defensive performance of the team; a lot of times it has been said that the players are feeling more comfortable playing with a line of five defenders, but the numbers are giving a different picture, because within the last five matches, Lotina’s team has leaked the astonishing number of fifteen goals, which is the worst mark in the period and the main explanation for the downward spiral experienced by Depor in recent weeks.
