TARGETING THE PERMANENCE

11 Mar 2011
Deportivo only needs eleven more points in order to clinch the salvation; that means four more victories or a combination of three wins plus two draws. All of this with eleven matchdays remaining in the calendar.

Monday’s victory over Real Sociedad has allowed Deportivo to put a distance of five points with the relegation zone; important but not definitive difference in the quest for the permanence. And it’s that on this liga season things have been pretty tight at the bottom of the table, just to mention the fact that six different clubs have occupied the last place at the standings for at least one matchday, including Deportivo.

Currently, the standings are practically a “uniform ladder” as the difference between the 11th spot and the last place is just of ten points, and the same is repeated between the 5th and the 10th place, because the difference between those positions is just of seven points.

The current situation at the standings:

Depor has added 31 points, and mathematically it needs 11 more points in order to certify the permanence –nobody has been relegated to Segunda adding 41 points after 80 years of history in la liga- The combination for the goal would be to win four more matches or to clinch three wins plus two draws. Even to only add two victories but in this case needing five draws.

It looks feasible taking in mind that Deportivo still has to play seven more games at the Riazor: UD Levante (matchday 29), RCD Mallorca (matchday 30), Racing Santander (matchday 32), Atletico Madrid (matchday 34), Athletic Bilbao (matchday 36) and Valencia (matchday 38). There are also three key visits against direct rivals: Malaga CF (matchday 31), Hércules CF (matchday 33) and Sporting Gijón (matchday 35).

Some fans might even be thinking of the European positions, but that’s a major goal that’s almost impossible to reach, because in order to end sixth at the end of any normal season, any club at least needs 58 points, which means that Deportivo would need to clinch 27 more points. In other words it would need to win nine of the remaining eleven matchdays on the liga campaign.
