THE BATTLE CONTINUES

06 Apr 2011
The important victory over Mallorca mean a relief for the players, but the battle isn’t over yet as Depor still needs eight more points in order to clinch the permanence at Primera División.

Only five of the eleven teams involved in the fight for the permanence were able to win their games on the weekend (Depor, Hércules, Racing Santander, Levante and Sporting Gijón), the main winners of the matchday are Levante and Racing, the first because its rally of seven wins in ten matches is leaving them in a favourable situation only needing four more points to reach the magic mark of 42, while the second team only needs six.

With the pass of the matchdays the number of teams involved in the fight for the salvation will be reduced, for the moment the club in the worst situation is UD Almeria, the last place in the table that is four points behind the safety and that also has the worst calendar as five of its eight remaining games are against teams at the top of the table (at Barcelona, Vs. Valencia, Vs. Sevilla, Vs. Villarreal and at Real Madrid).

Hércules CF and Málaga CF still have good chances as both clubs are only separated by one point from Real Zaragoza, team that currently marks the salvation. The advantage in this battle is for Hércules, because six of its eight remaining games are against direct rivals, and the two matches against the European candidates are against the irregulars RCD Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.

Neither the calendar of Malaga is negative, because they still have to play five games at La Rosaleda, starting with two straight games against direct rivals Deportivo and RCD Mallorca, while their three meetings against teams at the top will come until the last four matchdays (Atletico, Athletic Bilbao and Barca).

Deportivo needs eight more points to clinch the permanence and now faces three straight games against direct rivals, two of them are visits to clubs that are currently living at the relegation zone –Malaga and Hércules- and the other is the home game against Racing Santander, side that’s reacting as it has won its last two games in liga.

Big part of the hopes for the Galicians rely on these three games, because in the last five meetings Lotina’s team is facing four teams at the top (Atletico, Valencia, Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona) plus the always difficult visit to Sporting Gijón.

Finally, to mention that both Getafe FC and Real Sociedad are now directly involved in the fight for salvation, the Madrilenians have lost eight of their last fourteen matches and are now tied in points with Depor, while the Basques are only one point above the duo and with a terrible mark of eleven defeats within the last sixteen liga games.
