39, 40, 41, 42 OR 43?

13 Apr 2011
Deportivo could need lesser points than the expected ones in order to clinch the permanence; all because the teams at the bottom are not reacting, which means that Lotina’s team might be saved with only two more wins.

The fight for the permanence lived a new chapter on the past weekend and things didn’t change too much, because two of the four direct confrontations between the teams fighting to survive ended in a draw, and also because the three teams currently living at the relegation zone were unable to win their matches. In the end Depor still has a five-point gap with the pit, all with only seven matches remaining in the calendar.

However, there’s an important factor: the three teams at the bottom places are now three points behind the rest, which means that they need two games in order to leave the pit. Malaga could only draw with Lotina’s team (0-0), while Levante scored a late goal that meant a point against Racing (1-1); Sporting Gijón achieved a big win over Osasuna (1-0), and the most important game was the one of Zaragoza, side that put Getafe inside the danger zone with a 2-1 win at La Romareda.

As things were on the past week, eleven teams still have to secure the permanence at Primera División:

At this point, all the sides involved in the fight for the permanence are starting to make their calculations; everybody is asking the same question: what is the magic number in order to achieve the goal? Historically, nobody has ended at Segunda after adding 43 points, so it is considered as the magic number; actually in two of the last five seasons the 18th place, the last one that means a ticket to hell, ended la liga campaign with 42 points.

However, there are seasons in which much less points are needed in order to conquer the salvation, as example the last season as Malaga CF only needed 37 points in order to save itself. And this liga campaign could mean a very similar scenario.

Deportivo is currently 15th at the standings, and the five teams below the Galicians have had an erratic behavior in recent weeks; actually none of those five clubs have added more than ten points within the last seven matchdays: Malaga CF (10), Real Zaragoza (10), Hercules CF (5), UD Almeria (5), and Getafe CF (3). If this progression is repeated within the last seven games remaining in the schedule, then it will mean that the salvation can be achieved with only 38 points, and that Hercules CF, UD Almeria and Getafe CF will be the condemn clubs.

But it is a situation that changes according to the results of each matchday, so nothing is for sure. What seems probable is that Deportivo has a big probability of been save d with two more victories in la liga, reason why the coming match against Racing Santander is so important.

Lotina thinks the same, as he said to a reporter at the airport of Malaga, “This is the game, if we win on Sunday, then we can almost start to feel saved. Sometimes I thought that we were needing to reach the mark of the 43 points, and in others that we needed fewer points, but everything changes with every game. You never know. All I know is that the match against Racing is the game for us.”
