LASSAD’S BEST MOMENT

20 Apr 2011
Lassad is living his best moment at Depor after been promoted from Fabril; it comes in the season in which the striker has his tendency to suffer injuries and is now one of the most regular players at the first team.

Finally 26-year old strikerLassad Nouioui is having continuity at Deportivo’s first squad; the injuries are gone and the Tunisian is getting the minutes that he needs to prove his value. He is now sharing with Adrian the role of top-scorer at the team, though the ex-Fabril needed lesser minutes to score his five goals in liga (1,274 against 2,305 for the Asturian).

His arrival to Deportivo can be considered as an accident; at the end of the year 2006, Deportivo B was completing its first half of season at Segunda División B after spending six years at Tercera. The squad was surprising everybody as it was fighting for the promotion to Segunda Division A, but there was a problem: the lack of goals. Neither former players Aridane nor Ruben Rivera were adding goals. Then, the coach of Fabril, Tito Ramallo, decided to do something that Depor B had never done in the previous seven years: to sign reinforcements in the winter window, more precisely an attacker capable of bringing goals.

Several youngsters were tested for the job, among them Lassad. The striker arrived to A Coruña on December of 2007; he was tested at Abegondo alongside other African/French forwards as part of a ‘package’ prepared by one of the countless agents that visits Abegondo. Unfortunately for the Marseille-born youngster, he got injured during one of the practices with Depor B. But Ramallo noticed interesting things in the boy and asked him to return when he was healed. Then the attacker returned two weeks later and immediately, he signed a one-year deal with Depor B.

It was the right call as Lassad scored 9 goals in the 16 games in which he played at the end of the Segunda B season 2007/08; in the following campaign he scored 8 times in 20 matches. Then, in November of 2008, Lotina was suffering a plague of injuries at the first team and picked Lassad for the game against Villarreal (January 31, 2009). He debuted at Primera performing for the final five minutes on that game.

Lassad left a positive impression and by the end of the season 2008/09 he was promoted to the first team on a permanent basis. It seemed to be the beginning of a promising career, but then the injuries started to affect him. It was noticed that his hamstring muscles were too short, which meant the he had the tendency to suffer from muscular problems.

During the season 2008/09 he alternated between Fabril and the first team completing fourteen Primera games and scoring three goals, but on the season 2009/10, when he was already a full time member of the first team, the Tunisian only completed 19 appearances and in only one opportunity he performed for the full ninety minutes. He just scored two goals on this campaign. The reason for these disappointing numbers was the countless injuries that prevented him to have regularity.

Then, for the present liga campaign, Lassad decided to work hard and was the first man that started the pre-season stage; he completed a special routine to prevent the hamstring injuries. And the results can be noticed. On this season he has played in 28 of the 32 liga games disputed until this day; of the four matches that he missed, in two of them Lotina discarded him for tactical reasons, while only in two opportunities he was out due to an injury: a toe problem and an ankle sprain.

And then his numbers started to grow; on this season he is the second striker with more games (28) and minutes (1,274) in la liga competition, he is also sharing the Pichichi spot with Adrian (5 goals) and on Sunday’s meeting with Racing Santander he gave his first assist of the liga campaign. The Tunisian is also the second player with more attempts to score (44, 17 shots on target), just one less than Adrian (45, 20 shots on target).

Now, the coaching staff hopes that he will keep improving and recommend to extend his contract (lasting until 2012); Depor Sport announced this week that the negotiations already started and the player already confirmed it; after all what Lassad wants is to “keep playing on here an grow up as a player.” Lassad said after Monday’s training session.
