AT THE EDGE OF THE ABYSS

03 May 2011
Terrible weekend for Deportivo; Lotina’s men not only lost at home, but also saw how almost all the direct rivals were winning their matches. Now Depor is one point above the abyss and with only four games remaining.

It seemed that faith was against Deportivo during the weekend, because five of the nine teams that still trying to achieve the permanence won their respective matches. And one of the four sides that lost their games was Deportivo. Right now the Galicians are just one point above the pit, it is tied in points with Osasuna, but the Navarrans have a better goal difference (-3) compared to Depor (-15).

To remember that the relegation could be defined by a simple detail as a goal difference, the first criterion is the particular series between two clubs, but since both games between Osasuna and Depor were scoreless draws, then the goal difference is used as the second criterion.

Using the first criterion, Depor has won the particular series –the aggregate of the two games in la liga- against Mallorca (2-1), Racing Santander (2-1) and Málaga (3-0), but has lost against Real Sociedad (2-4), Zaragoza (0-1) and Getafe (6-3). Finally, against there’s a tie against Hércules, but right now the goal difference of the Galicians (-15) is better than the one of Los Herculanos (-22).

It could be said that UD Almeria is the first relegated club to Segunda División, it isn’t a mathematical fact, but it is close to happen. Because, with twelve points remaining in dispute, it is exactly the distance between the Andalusians with Depor and Osasuna; Almeria won the particular series against both clubs, but if Galicians and Navarrans add just one more point or if the Andalusians lost one more point, then the relegation will be official. It could even happen on next weekend.

Hércules CF also suffered a hard hit on Sunday as it lost at Malaga CF (1-3), they are five points below the safety, and despite having a favourable calendar they don’t depend on themselves anymore as they need the help of other teams. So, in the end, it seems that the fight is reduced to seven clubs that will try to avoid the remaining ticket to hell: Real Sociedad, Racing Santander, Málaga CF, Zaragoza, Osasuna, Deportivo and Getafe.

The current situation at the bottom of the table:

The results on the weekend also indicates that the fight will continue until the last matchday, also that any team wanting to survive will need to at least reach the mark of the 43 points. To appoint that within the last decade three clubs already went down despite adding 42 points: Betis (2000), Real Zaragoza ( 2009) and Betis (2010).

Matchday 35 will be charged with a lot of excitement; almost all the matches involving the relegation will take place on Saturday; the key is the visit of UD Almeria to Getafe CF. A win of the Madrilenians will put Depor (and probably other clubs) in deeper troubles, while it will certify the relegation of the Andalusians.

At the same hour Depor will be visiting Sporting Gijón, a club close to achieve the permanence. If Getafe conquers a victory and if Deportivo at least adds a point at El Molinón then the tension will be passed to Osasuna, side that visits Real Zaragoza on Sunday’s night.  Other important meeting in the quest for the permanence is the visit of Racing to Hércules; this last club is playing one of its last bullets in order to stay alive at the elite.
