THE LAST GAME AT DEPOR?

19 May 2011
The situation at the standings is hiding the fact that Sunday’s could be the last game of Lotina at Deportivo; also there are ten players that could be performing for the last time wearing the Blanquiazul shirt.

The attention of the public in recent weeks has been focused in the current situation of the team in la liga, and it’s that Depor is reaching the last matchday of the season and is still trying to avoid relegation. This tense scenario is distracting everybody’s attention and therefore the fact that Sunday’s meeting could be the last one for several people at Depor is passing unnoticed.

And the first man on the list is Miguel Ángel Lotina; the Basque coach is living his fourth year at Deportivo and is highly commented that he won’t renew. President Lendoiro and Lotina himself have said in the past that they weren’t going to talk of the issue until the team is saved, but since the permanence hasn’t been achieved the subject has been ignored until this point. Some past comments from the coach, plus the results on this season invites to think that Lendoiro is going to search for somebody else.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s starting lineup could be presenting up to four men that could be playing their last game wearing Depor’s shirt: striker Adrian López, defender Albert Lopo, striker Xisco, and midfielder Juan Rodriguez. All of them are ending contract in June. Adrian has been linked with a move to Atletico, Lopo and Rodriguez were linked with Getafe, while Xisco is returning to Newcastle United after ending his loan period. In recent weeks the president made an approach to Lopo, but the negotiations haven’t been successful.

Another usual starter that could leave is midfielder Antonio Tomás; he has been out lately due to a quadriceps injury and might end saying good-bye from the bench. The Cantabrian player has been linked with clubs like Racing Santander and Sporting Gijón. He is also ending contract and so far nothing has been commented about a possible renewal.

Other five players ending contract have spent more time as substitutes than as starters on the pitch: goalkeeper Manuel Fernandez ‘Manu’, Juliano Antonello ‘Juca’, midfielder Miguel Alfonso Javaloyas ‘Michel’, left winger Yves Desmarets and striker José Sand. It’s unlikely that any of them will renew.

The case of Michel is special, the playmaker is loaned from Valencia CF and the club commented a few months ago that they were going to attempt to negotiate a new loan, but nothing was said later, especially after Lotina decided to, mysteriously, sideline the player from the lists of picked players within the last two months. In the case of Desmarets, he has a renewal option on his contract, but it won’t be fulfilled as the Frenchman won’t play in the 50% of the matches on the season. The loan contract of Sand has a buyout option (€3 million, but it is probable that Lendoiro will execute the clause, especially since he has barely played within the last two months.

Finally, there are three special cases of players that are leaving: left-back Knut Olav Rindarøy, striker Rodolfo Bodipo and right winger Javito. Norwegian Rindarøy was disenrolled during the winter window, but stayed training at the team as he never found any team where to play. Bodipo is passing unnoticed at Elche, while Javito will return to Greece without playing any minute in la liga due to his transfer problem.

Other players that could be facing their last game at Deportivo are Andrés Guardado and Diego Colotto. Both are tasting options for other clubs and Lendoiro could be tempted to transfer them, especially in the case of Mexican Guardado, who ends his contract in 2012. In the case of Colotto, the club is already trying to extend his contract.
