Riki is now the third captain if Deportivo after spending six years at the Galician club; he talked to reporters and explained his positivism towards the Segunda season that’s about to start.

Iván Sánchez Rico Soto ‘Riki’ is about to live his sixth season at Deportivo, and now he is becoming into the third captain of  the team after the departures of Lopo and Juan Rodriguez. Depor is a club used to traditions, and one of those traditions is to give the role of team captain to the players with more time at the club.

And Riki is now the third player at the current squad with more years at the club, just behind Manuel Pablo and Valerón; the ex-Getafe striker gave a press conference at Abegondo and was convinced of his importance at the team, “I consider myself as an important player at the group and will give everything for it. I am hopeful and am afraid of nothing.”

“I’ve spent five or six years at Deportivo and still haven’t been the captain during a match. Something is failing. Above me I have two great players [Manuel Pablo and Valerón]. Not even in the friendly games I was able to be the captain and they laugh at me, but I am convinced that my moment will come.” He joked about the issue.

Riki is also living a positive moment on the pitch as he has been the best scorer on the pre-season with six goals in favour, including the hat-trick against Negreira. About this fact he said that, “It is a matter of been on shape and it is always good to materialize your scoring opportunities. I am happy, because any attacker gains confidence if he scores the goals.”

Despite his recent form, the Madrilenian attacker is convinced that Depor is going to reinforce the team with at least one new striker, “The season is long, a lot of things can happen and the club is making a big effort, because it isn’t easy to choose a striker that can contribute with a lot of goals and that could arrive paying a small fee, still I am convinced that one or two new strikers will arrive.”

He is also pleased with the team that José Luis Oltra is preparing ahead of the Segunda season, “We are preparing a competitive and balanced team in order to achieve the promotion, and right now we are only missing three or four touches to end having a strong squad. I am surprised to see how the new arrivals are adapting to the team, they are adding competitiveness, experience and depth.”
Finally, Riki is confident in the fact that Deportivo won’t lose too much strength with the possible exits during the last days of the transfer market, “The president knows a lot about this business and won’t undersell anyone. They are players highly desired by other clubs, but they aren’t willing to pay what the club wants, so as long as we keep the major part of the team, the better for the group. We are willing to achieve the promotion.”
