THE NINE LIFES OF BODIPO

23 Sep 2011
It can be said that Rodolfo Bodipo never surrender; for the third time in his career at Depor the striker was discarded during the pre-season, but in the end he is having minutes in the official matches, though it is for the injury cases hitting the team.

On Wednesday, coach José Luis Oltra and his assistant Chema Sanz had a long conversation with Rodolfo Bodipo; the conversation called the attention of reporters and it appeared in all the newspapers in La Coruña. The Valencian trainer was explaining some tactical issues to the Equatoguinean attacker, which indicates that he will be picked for the upcoming clash with Alcorcón, this since Xisco and Riki aren’t available due to the injuries.

It was an unthinkable picture before the start in the Segunda season, because Bodipo was discarded together with defenders Claudio Morel and Diego Seoane. But the large list of injuries is forcing Oltra to rely on him. Bodipo already debuted in Copa and Liga as he disputed eight minutes in the clash with Girona and eleven in the past match with Sabadell.

It isn’t an important number of minutes, but it’s a great advance for a player that was at the door out until the last day of the summer window. Now his goal is to try to demonstrate that he deserves more opportunities, and a positive sign is that the public has shown his support as the player was applauded in the matches in which he entered into the pitch as a substitute.

Oltra clearly explained the status of the player during a recent interview with Riazor.org, “Bodipo knows that he isn’t entering into my plans for the team, but if he earns a spot, if he convinces me and if I don’t see anyone better at Fabril, then he will have minutes.”

And it isn’t a new situation for Bodipo, because he already lived the same scenario twice during the era with Lotina. He was discarded for the first time during the pre-season 2008/09, but the striker stayed and even ended as the starting choice of Lotina scoring five goals in twenty-one matches.

One year later Bodipo was again discarded by Lotina, and again the player stayed at the team, though this time he only played fifteen matches due to the injuries, that was the only of his four seasons at Deportivo in which the ex-Alavés man ended scoreless.
