NO GOALS AWAY FROM THE RIAZOR

21 Oct 2011
Oltra is not finding the solution for the old problems of scoring goals, mainly when the team plays away from home. Depor has been left scoreless in its last 239 minutes as a visitor; it also has the poorest scoring mark since August of 2010.

Deportivo still presenting poor scoring numbers when it leaves the Riazor; last season it meant a record at the club as Lotina’s team only conquered nine goals playing away from home, it was the worst mark since the five goals scored on the season 1972/73, precisely the Primera campaign in which the Galicians suffered their previous relegation to Segunda.

Now the same ghost is chasing Depor at Segunda División; it seemed that the problem was solved as Oltra’s Deportivo scored three times within thirty-one minutes in the first visit of the season at the Mini Stadi against Barcelona B, but it was just a mirage as the Galicians have remained scoreless since then; now they accumulate 239 without conquering a goal away from the Riazor.

Actually, taking in mind the numbers of the clubs currently playing at Primera and Segunda, Deportivo has the worst mark of goals scored as a visitor since August of 2010, because Los Blanquiazules have just scored 12 goals since that date. The other clubs with scoring problems in the same period are Hercules CF (13), Sporting Gijón (14), RCD Espanyol (16), FC Cartagena (17) and Real Zaragoza (19).

To have in mind that Depor is targeting the direct promotion to Primera División, and during the last season the first two places at the standings scored 32 and 30 goals respectively (Betis and Rayo Vallecano), which means that Depor would need to score 27 goals in its remaining 18 visits for an average of 1.5 goals per match.

It looks difficult, but there’s also the case of Granada CF, club that only scored 21 goals a visitor and that ended at Primera División, though it had to clear the way out through the promotion playoff. It may look like pure statistics, but the numbers just indicate the path to follow and the road is simple: to score the goals.
