MATCHDAY 16: THE MOMENT OF ELCHE

07 Dec 2011
No big changes at the top six positions and neither at the bottom four places, though Elche and Huesca achieved big wins that put them on track of their goals.

Elche CF was the big winner of the weekend, because its 3-0 win over growing team Barcelona B put them at the second place at the standings for the first time on the Segunda season. In this way the Valencians are capitalizing an impressive run that has brought to them 16 of the last 18 points in dispute.

Córdoba CF was another big winner of the past weekend, because its 3-0 win over little CD Alcoyano gained them a couple of spots at the standings. The true is that the six clubs that were last week on the promotion spots didn’t lose their matches, and it’s that the two direct confrontations had on the matchday ended in draws (2-2 between Almeria and Hércules & 0-0 between Real Valladolid and Deportivo).

For Depor it was the second goalless draw on the Segunda season and the fourth time in which the Galician remained scoreless, just in the week in which the team was praised as it was among the best scorers in the league. In the other hand, it was the fifth clean sheet achieved on the campaign.

Still, the situation is tight at the standings; only five points are separating the first six positions on the table, while the difference between third place Real Valladolid and fourteenth spot CD Numancia is only of six points, meaning that anything can happen in a matter of two or even in one matchday.

Matchday 17 could be positive for Deportivo, because the Galicians are one of the two teams among the first seven places that will play at home. Oltra’s team entertains CD Numancia at the Riazor, while the big match of the weekend is the visit of third place Real Valladolid to the leader Hércules CF.

Second place Elche CF visits twelfth place CE Sabadell, fourth place Córdoba CF does the same with relegated-troubled Gimnástic Tarragona, fifth place UD Almeria visits thirteenth place Barcelona B, and seventh place RC Celta plays on the road at eighth place AD Alcorcón.

Meanwhile, the battle for survival continues with the same protagonists, because the same four clubs are still leaving inside the relegation zone, but SD Huesca is clearly growing in the competition; the Aragonians clinched a huge 3-1 win at CD Xérez and accumulate a rally of four straight games without losing, including two consecutive victories, now they are only one point below safety.

Next weekend will be challenging for the bottom places, because the four sides at the pit face complicate rivals, last place FC Cartagena plays at home as it hosts ninth place UD Las Palmas, Nástic receives fourth place Córdoba, Girona CF visits direct rival CD Alcoyano, and SD Huesca does the same with fifteenth place Recreativo de Huelva.
