REVIEW: DEPORTIVO 3 – NUMANCIA 1 (LIGA)

11 Dec 2011
Good game of a Deportivo that was close to lose two points in the second part; the Galicians displayed an attractive offensive football that brought three points, though again the team had some lagoons at defense.

BEFORE THE GAME
No surprises at Deportivo’s starting lineup as Oltra was presenting the expected formation; Dani Aranzubia was at the goal, Laure was covering the right-back position, Ayoze Diaz performed on the left sector, while the central defenders were Diego Colotto and Ze Castro.

Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños were the two pivotes, Juan Carlos Valerón was the playmaker in the formation, Bruno Gama played at the right wing, Andrés Guardado did it on the left, and Lassad Nouioui was the central attacker. In this way Oltra repeated the starting formation for the third straight game.

At Numancia, coach Pablo Machín was presenting the novelty of Congolese Cedric Mabwati attacking from the right flank, which moved Julio Álvarez to the playmaking function, while Juan José Expósito ´Juanjo´ was the central attacker.

FIRST HALF
Convincing first part of a Deportivo that had the best opportunities and that scored the goals, but Numancia gave a hard battle as it surprisingly was attacking instead of been locked at the back zone; the penetrations by the wings, and mainly the counterattacks, were the decisive actions for the Galicians.

Depor started strongly and had a clear opportunity just thirty seconds after the kick-off; it was a combination between Juan Dominguez and Álex in which the blonde midfielder fired from inside area, and his attempt hit a defender and the ball went to corner-kick. At minute 5, the locals asked for a penalty after Nano handled the ball inside the area in a cross released by Guardado, but the referee said that it was a corner-kick.

At minute 9, Guardado threw a corner-kick and Valerón headed the ball at the far post, but his attempt went over the crossbar; and two minutes later Numancia sent its first warning; it was a cross of Unai that Nano headed inside the area jumping all over Laure; Aranzubia deflected the ball with one hand, then it hit the crossbar and then Colotto cleared the danger at the goal line.

Little by little Numancia started to feel more comfortable on the pitch, but suddenly it came the goal for Depor; Numancia lost the ball at midfield and Guardado unleashed a counterattack on the right wing, then the Mexican sent a high cross that Alex Bergantiños found at the edge of the area, and he put a perfect pass in the head of Valerón, who later assisted Lassad, and the Tunisian attacked closed the beautiful play pushing the ball in to score his seventh goal on the liga season.

Then the match became more interesting; Numancia opened its lines searching for the equalizer, while the Galicians were finding the cracks to release its accurate counterattacks; the visitors were close to score at minute 17 as Juanjo found the ball at the edge of the area, but he was unable to release a proper shot when he entered into the area, and in the next play Lassad missed the target after the hurried attempt to clear the ball by visiting goalie Edu Navaro

Numancia was brave enough as it was trying to search for the goal of Aranzubia, but that courage was deadly against the explosive combination in attack of Deportivo. The true is that the style of the visitors surprised everybody, because it was expected to see a tough rival putting a lot of mark at midfield, but instead Oltra’s men met an opponent that allowed a fluid game, which in the end was a crucial advantage for the locals.

The second goal of Depor also came in a counterattack; it was after a corner-kick in favor of Numancia, the Galicians regained the ball and the whole action ended with a cross of Ze Castro from the left wing that was cleared by Jaio with a header, his clearance became a high ball that Andrés Guardado found at the edge of the area to rifle an impressive curved shot that hit the far post of Edu Navarro, then it entered into the net by the other post. It’s the sixth goal in liga for the Mexican winger.

Depor even had the chance to score a third goal before the half-time mark; it was a new counterattack for the Galicians in which Bruno Gama was alone enough inside the are to assist Juan Dominguez, but his final attempt was cleared by a rival (38’).

SECOND HALF
It seemed that Deportivo had things under control as it was having a placid situation, Oltra even started to make his substitutions thinking of Tuesday’s game in Copa Del Rey, but the strong spirit of Numancia put Depor in big troubles, though in the end it clinched an important victory.

The final part started with Numancia trying to have the ball possession, while Depor was waiting at the back to release its dangerous counterattacks; in one of those actions Ze Castro released a long ball searching for Guardado, the Mexican drilled the ball from the left wing, but Álex was unable to shot on target (47’)

Three minutes later Aranzubia cleared a cross coming from the left, the loose ball was found by Larrea at the edge of the area, but he sent the ball wide. Numancia was a willful side that never surrendered, but the true is that they were a naïve team that left too many spaces before a Deportivo that knows how to seize those cracks.

Depor’s next chance in the game came at minute 57, Bruno Gama made a great play on the right wing and drilled a perfect pass to the edge of the area, Valerón was alone there, but his crossed shot just passed close to the far post.

Then Oltra begun to make his chances; the first was the entry of Borja Fernandez for Valerón, clearly a move trying to refresh the Canarian ahead of the last week of football in 2011. And just two minutes later Numancia scored its goal; it was a free-kick coming from the left of Julio Álvarez that Juanjo headed between Colotto and Ayoze, it was his fourth goal in liga.

Depor regained the control over the actions after the goal, it approached into the rival’s area, but it didn’t create any scoring opportunity; then Riki replaced Lassad. Both attackers passed unnoticed in the second part. At minute 74, Depor made several interesting plays across the area of Numancia, but neither Juan Dominguez nor Alex were able to shot on target as their attempts were blocked; the visitors responded with a header of Juanjo after a cross of Nieto, but the striker missed the target.

Then Numancia had a priceless opportunity to equalize the actions as Ze Castro committed a clear penalty after the Portuguese defender fouled a Juanjo that was going to face Aranzubia one-on-one, ten minutes were remaining and the Riazor feared that its team was going to lose two points, but then masked Julio Álvarez missed the penalty sending the ball over the crossbar.

And just three minutes later Deportivo secured the three point thanks to the Galician combination at midfield; Bruno Gama made a short pass to Álex at the edge of the area, then he drilled a pass into the right sector of the area, Juan Dominguez followed the trajectory of the ball and placed it at the near post with a precise drilling attempt. It’s the second goal in liga for him.

So, from a possible 2-2 the game was now in a 3-1 situation, all in a matter of five minutes. Depor had a couple of chances to score the fourth goal, but in the first chance nobody found the ball at the opposite side after a cross of Guardado, while at the last minute of the stoppage time central defender Egoitz Jaio pulled Riki from behind just when the Madrilenian was going to enter into the penalty area; the defender was sent off and Ze Castro threw the free-kick over the crossbar.

AFTER THE GAME
Depor was close to waste the good effort of the first part as Numancia missed a penalty ten minutes before the final whistle; despite everything it was a fair result as Oltra’s team displayed a convincing offensive football, this time helped by the concessions of the rival.

The result leaves Depor at the third place at the standings, just one point behind Elche CF, but still waiting for the result between Valladolid CF and Hércules CF. On next Sunday Depor plays the last liga game of 2011 as it visits UD Las Palmas (12h00 CET), but before, on Tuesday, the Galicians host UD Levante as part of the first-leg of the last-32 round in Copa Del Rey (21h00 CET).
