DEPORTIVO IN 2011

27 Dec 2011
It was the year of despair as Depor returned to Segunda División after twenty years at the elite, but it was also the year of hope as the Galician club seems to be now on the right track to return to Primera.

2011 won’t be remembered by Depor’s fans as a good year after the relegation suffered in May, but at the same time 2011 is the year of hope as seven months later the team is living at the second position at Segunda, which means the so-wished direct promotion zone that gives a ticket to the elite of Spanish football. Deportivo is occupying the position only by the goal difference over Hércules CF, but is enough to encourage everyone.

Globally, Deportivo played 47 official matches during the year 2011, it disputed two competitions –40 games in liga and 7 in Copa Del Rey- achieving 20 victories, 10 draws and suffering 17 defeats. The balance between goals in favour and goals allowed is pretty equal, because Depor scored 63 goals in the year that’s ending, and it allowed 62.

In Copa Del Rey, the Galician team was eliminated twice, first before UD Almeria and then against Levante UD, but still had a positive record disputing seven matches, winning four of them and losing the other three. It scored sixteen goals in those seven meetings and it allowed twelve.

In liga things can be dived in two parts; the first was the first semester as Depor was still competing at Primera División. The Galicians were only able to add six wins within January and May (2-1 at Athletic Bilbao, 1-0 Vs. Villarreal, 2-1 Vs. Real Sociedad, 2-1 Vs. RCD Mallorca, 2-0 Vs. Racing Santander and 2-1 Vs. Athletic Bilbao).

The true is that the results at the end of 2010 were the ones that condemned Deportivo to the relegation, because only analyzing the results in 2011 it’s possible to determine that Lotina’s Depor ended the liga tournament at the 14th position, above clubs like Getafe CF and RCD Mallorca, teams that achieved the salvation at the last matchdays of the past season.

For the second semester, Depor had a slow start at Segunda División, but by the end of the year the team, now coached by José Luis Oltra, was occupying the second positions at the standings, its highest position on the liga campaign until this point; though it’s true that things are pretty tight as only four points are separating leader Hércules CF from seventh place Córdoba CF. Still, it’s a sign of hope of what 2012 can mean for Deportivo.
