ANALYSIS: THE GOALS AT DEPORTIVO

11 Jan 2012
The quartet Guardado-Riki-Lassad-Valerón has participated in 25 of the 31 goals scored by Depor on this season; the contribution of other players like Salomão and Juan Dominguez has been essential too.

It’s well-known that in order to achieve the promotion Deportivo needs to score a lot of goals, the scoring problems of past seasons was creating doubts ahead of the present campaign at Segunda, the club even searched to reinforce the striking zone trying to get a top-scorer, though in the end new coach José Luis Oltra ended relying in the trio composed by Riki, Xisco and Lassad.

And things are working fine so far, because Deportivo has scored 31 goals after 19 matchdays at Liga Adelante, that’s exactly the same mark had on the entire previous season at Primera with Lotina. And the point is that beyond depending of one player, the goals are coming thanks to the collective work.

Still, there’s a small group of players that’s concentrating all the stats. In this sense to emphasize the contribution of the ‘magic quartet’ composed by Riki, Guardado, Lassad and Valerón, because these four men have scored or assisted in 25 of the 31 goals conquered by Depor on the present league season, which means 81% of the total.

Guardado is the current Pichichi at the team, with eight goals scored and also with four assists; it seems the Mexican could easily reach the mark of 15 goals on the season, which will be the highest mark for a midfielder at the club since Rivaldo scored 21 during the Primera season 1996/97. Lassad is following him very closely as the Tunisian already scored six times, and it seems that, finally, a Depor’s striker will pass the mark of ten goals in one single season, the last man that did this at Depor was Diego Tristán (11 on the season 2005/06).

Valerón has only scored once on the liga tournament, but he’s the best assistor at the team with five assists so far, while Riki, despite the injuries, is the third best scorer at the team with three goals in favour. Apart from this quartet, there are other players that are bringing a valuable contribution in attack, like the case of winger Diogo Salomão, who has scored three goals, or Galicians centre midfielders Juan Dominguez and Álex Bergantiños, both combined has given five assists in liga.

About the moment of the goals, Deportivo likes to score at the beginning and also at the end of the matches; so far the Galicians have scored eight times within the first fifteen minutes, actually six of the eleven wins on the Segunda season came after Depor scored a goal in this frame of the encounters. Depor has also scored six goals within the last fifteen minutes, in resume 14 of the 31 goals on the season (45% of the total) have came whether within the first or the last fifteen minutes of the games.

Another moment in which Depor likes to scores goals is the end of the first part; so far Oltra’s team has scored seven goals within minutes 30 & 45. The lowest frame is within minutes 61 and 75, moment when Deportivo has only scored two goals.
