THE RENAISSANCE OF RIKI

15 Feb 2012
On Sunday, Riki scored his first brace in three years and tied his best mark of goals at Deportivo, but the best news is that he was able to complete the ninety minutes for the third time on the season. The Madrilenian lives a sweet moment.

One of the many good news from Sunday’s match at the Rico Pérez stadium was Iván Sánchez Rico Soto ‘Riki’, the Madrilenian striker scored a brace and led Deportivo to its eighth straight victory in liga. It’s the first time in three years in which the ex-Getafe man scores two goals in one game, the previous opportunity was in the 5-3 at the Riazor against Racing Santander (March 7th, 2009)

Both goals are also moving Riki to the top of the list of Pichichis at Deportivo, now he has eighth goals added to his tally, tying the mark of Mexican Guardado and also tying his best mark at the club from the Primera season 2009/10.  The best career mark of Riki in one single season is 18 goals (Tercera season 2003/04 at Real Madrid C).

But perhaps the best news is that he completed the ninety minutes without having any muscular problem, an important fact taking in mind that he was the only available striker for the meeting  It was just the third time on the liga campaign in which he played the full match, curiously the previous occasions were also games played away from the Riazor: at Real Murcia and at FC Cartagena.

Another interesting stat is that Riki is presenting his best scoring average since joining Deportivo; the 31-year-old attacker has an average of one goal scored every 113 minutes; his previous best mark was a goal in favour every 180 minutes (season 2008/09).

On Monday, Riki talked to reporters; he was asked about the probability of reaching 16 goals on the season, and he answered that, “Let’s hope it could be a short forecast; I would love it, but I just want to play, later the other things will come. My intention is to keep playing and keep scoring goals. I had scoring chances in Huelva and didn’t do it. In Alicante I had more and scored twice. You will find scoring opportunities in all the matches. The important thing is to be there and create them.”

Riki also said that he’s feeling confident thanks to Oltra, “I always considered myself as an important player, but unfortunately due to the circumstance of the injuries or the lack of confidence from the previous coaches I didn’t play too often, and that fact has an impact in you. You can’t help if you aren’t on the pitch. Now I can still give more of myself and make great matches.”
