A NIGHTMARE SEASON FOR MANUEL PABLO

06 Mar 2012
The sweet moment lived by Deportivo at Segunda shadows the worst season of Manuel Pablo since his arrival to Depor. One of the team’s captains has lived endless physical problems that reduced his contribution to only 4 games.

Deportivo is enjoying the ride at Segunda División, commanding a league with a special Galician flavor, but away from the spotlights Manuel Pablo is lying down with his physical problems. The Canarian signed a two-year renewal days before the relegation was confirmed; he was expecting to be an important player in the quest for the promotion, but things have been twisted by the injuries.

The 36-year-old right-back started the season normally, been a starter in the clash before RC Recreativo, he played the full ninety minutes, and soon the problems started; in the next game he had to be replaced at half-time, it was the liga meeting with Hércules CF. Further scans determined that he suffered a hamstring strain injury, reason why he should have been out for three weeks.

But he never was the same since then; he recovered at the end of 2011 and played twice as a substitute, first as an emergency back-up for Ze Castro in the home meeting with UD Almeria (3-1, matchday 15), and later played four minutes replacing Bruno Gama in the visit to UD Las Palmas (1-0, matchday 18).

The Canarian also got a chance for the Copa series before UD Levante, he played the full ninety minutes in the first-leg, but only lasted twelve in the second, again he had to leave the pitch due to an injury, this time a thigh problem that should have sidelined him for a couple of weeks. In the end he never returned because, just when he seemed recovered, a new injury hit him.

This time it was a grade-one muscle injury on his right thigh (Soleus muscle), injury sustained during a training session at the end of January. At this point he’s training apart as the doctors don’t want to assume new risks, and for the moment there’s no deadline for his return.

These three injury cases have reduced his contribution to only 153 minutes in liga distributed in four matches; the Canarian is the fifth players at the team in terms of lesser minutes on the season, just above Xisco (152), Rodolfo Bodipo (67), David Rochela (14) and Lux (0).

Actually, this is the worst season for Manuel Pablo in terms of minutes on the pitch since his arrival to Deportivo thirteen years ago; he’s even having lesser minutes than on the campaign 2001/02, season in which he only played five games (412 minutes) after breaking his leg in the derby before RC Celta.

In his most recent interview (January) the former player of Las Palmas was admitting that this has been a tough season for him, ”2011 was horrible and all I ask is to have a better year. It has been pretty tough, because I never lived something similar; I´ve barely played in liga. I am no longer a rookie, but it screws me, just as it could screw any player at his 25 or 26. What any player wants is to play and after been out for so long you start searching for explanations. I am not enjoying as I am not even training, what you want is to be on touch with the partners and the ball.”

But the experience of Manuel Pablo tells him that he has to be patient, ”I try to be positive, reminding that soon I should be fine. We are going little by little, trying to not force anything and avoiding relapses. Truly I am willing to be there and this has been hard for me, but let’s hope that things will improve for me in 2012.”
