THE PERFECT MARK OF ÁLEX BERGANIÑOS

22 Mar 2012
Centre midfielder Álex Bergantiños is one of the seventh field players at Segunda División that have taken part of all the liga matches played on the season; it’s a great mark for a player that spent three years loaned at other clubs.

Perhaps one of the few good news after the relegation was to witness the return of Álex Bergantiños García, “the prodigal son” that had to spent three years loaned at other clubs –Xérez CD, Gimnástic Tarragona and Granada CF- before been accepted back at Deportivo. The Sagrada Familia-born player left Depor B been 21, and just claimed a spot at the starting team when he was 26.

It was under the command of Oltra and with the team performing at Segunda División after two decades of success at the elite; and it was a drastic change for him, because Álex was used to see how Caparrós and Lotina were discarding him during the pre-seasons, and suddenly he turned to be a fixed starter, and things have went to the extreme as the Galician midfielder, at this stage of the season, with only 13 matchdays remaining in the schedule, is just one of the seven field players at Liga Adelante 2001/12 that have taken part of all the 29 games played so far.

Beyond that, Álex is just one of the four field players that have been starters in all the matchdays of the season; he was only replaced in three opportunities; first in the 2-2 draw at home before Nástic (matchday 09); he was taken off at minute 66 as Oltra needed more punch in attack to break the tie. Then, he was replaced by Lassad in the home meeting with Girona (3-2, matchday 11), again Oltra was trying to break a draw.

The last time was on the home meeting before Villarreal B (1-0, matchday 21); once again Oltra was desperate to break a tie and sent Xisco to replace him. The midfielder is considered to be the defensive component of the Galician couple at midfield territory, but he has also showed some skills up front, like scoring twice before CD Guadalajara, plus giving a great assist to Riki and unlock the returning match before the same CD Guadalajara.

Now Álex could be ending his mark at this point, because he has been doubtful on this week; he ended the last game before CD Alcoyano dragging a thigh problem, the latest scans found out a muscle overload, and it isn’t know yet if he will be fit for Sunday. On Wednesday he was working apart.

If he recovers on time, then Bergantiños will continue enlarging his mark, and could turn to be the eighth field player at Depor that within the last decade plays all the games in one liga season; the other seven were Amavisca (2001-2002), Sergio (2001-2002), Roy Makaay (2002-2003), Valerón (2004-2005), Fabricio Coloccini (2007-2008) and Filipe Luis (2008-2009).
