TARGETING THE 80 POINTS

04 Apr 2012
Depor just need five more victories in order to reach the mark of 80 points, the same one that usually certifies the promotion to Primera; it’s something that can be done if the Galicians win the five games remaining at the Riazor.

Final stretch on the season, only eleven games are remaining in the schedule and the clubs are starting to make their calculations in order to reach the goals. In a past article it was explained that, historically, the mark of the 80 has been enough to certify the promotion to Primera División.

Now Deportivo only needs fourteen more points in order to reach that mark; it means five more victories that will allow Oltra’s team to end the season with 81 points, and Depor exactly has to play five more matches at the Riazor during this season, so it can be said that the Galicians just need to win their games at home in order to return to the elite of Spanish football.

At this point Real Valladolid, third place at the standings that marks the barrier between direct promotion and the playoffs, is eight points behind the Galicians, so if Depor is able to win five more matches, then Valladolid would have to add 23 of the 33 points in dispute (70% of the total) in order to tie that mark, at the same time second place RC Celta would have to add 19 more points (58%) to reach both clubs.

This combination will hardly happen, so it’s highly probable that Depor can celebrate the promotion as soon as it can reach the mark of the 80 points. Still, the road won’t be a bed of roses as Deportivo still have to face four direct rivals in the way, two of them will be visiting the Riazor in the coming weeks.

Deportivo still has to visit RC Celta and UD Almeria, while it will host Elche CF and Real Valladolid; these four clubs are targeting the playoffs, while the Galicians also have to face CD Numancia on the road and UD Las Palmas at the Riazor, two aspirants to the playoffs. Those are six of the last eleven rivals on the season.

Meanwhile, Real Valladolid has a more accessible calendar; los vallisoletanos are only facing three aspirants to the promotion: Depor, Hércules CF and AD Alcorcón. RC Celta will face the same rivals, plus Córdoba CF at the last matchday.
