THINKING OF ELCHE CF

20 Apr 2012
Oltra is having problems in attack ahead of Sunday’s game; Riki is out and Lassad is doubtful, but the situation is worse at Elche, because new coach Ferrando might end with only seventeen players available for the match.

The main consequence of the Galician derby at Deportivo is the casualty of striker Riki; the Madrilenian sustained a tear in a muscle of his right thigh and will be out of action for three or four weeks; in any case he was going to be unavailable for the meeting before Elche CF (Riazor, Sunday, 12h00 CET) as he also picked his fifth yellow card of the season in the onosoderbi, reason why he’s suspended.

Meanwhile Lassad Nouioui picked an ankle sprain during Wednesday’s training session; he didn’t train on Thursday, but isn’t ruled out yet for the game. Today is a key day as the doctors will decide if he will be fit or not for the liga meeting. The duo Riki-Lassad has scored 12 of the 58 goals scored by Depor on this liga campaign (21% of the total).

If the Tunisian ends missing the game, then the only available strikers for Oltra will be Xisco and Rodolfo Bodipo. The Majorcan has only played twice as a starter on this liga campaign scoring one goal, while the contribution of the Equatoguinean attacker on this liga tournament is reduced to 67 minutes on the pitch.

Another player in doubt is central defender Aythami Artiles; the Canarian is dragging a grade-one muscle injury from the past week. He didn’t train on Wednesday and on Thursday he just completed part of the training session, but in any case he has no chance of been a starter as Colotto and Ze Castro are holding on the stating spots. The other player missing the game is centre midfielder Jesús Vázquez, out for the rest of the season due to a fibula fracture.

At Elche, things are reaching a critical point; the Valencians were the leaders at Segunda at the end of 2011, but right now they’re outside of the promotion spots and urgently need the points. And to make things worse there are a lot of casualties hitting the team. New coach César Ferrando arrived a fortnight ago and won his first game at the club facing FC Cartagena (2-1), but he’s having a lot of problems in order to present a proper lineup.

Midfielder Sergio Mantecón is returning from suspension and central defender Héctor Vérdes (muscular) has been declared fit to play, but those are the only good news at the team, because later right-back Javier Carpio is missing the clash at the Riazor after picking a fifth yellow card on the season. Longer is the list of casualties due to the injuries. Centre midfielder Jorge Luque is out due to a Soleus problem; striker Miguel Linares was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee ligaments injury, same thing than centre midfielder Miguel Palanca, who is out until June due to a muscular injury.

And the problems don’t end there, because left-back Edu Albácar, one of the captains at the team and who missed the last match due to suspension, picked an adductor injury during the week and is doubtful for Sunday’s clash. Other two players in doubt are central defender Sergio Pelegrín (groin) and centre midfielder Cristóbal Márquez (stress fracture).

In the end Ferrando could be facing the match against Depor having seven casualties, which means to only have seventeen men available for the meeting at the Riazor. The club is even studying the option of signing ex-Nástic striker Berry Powel, who left his previous club due to disciplinary reasons; the Dutchman arrived to Elche on Thursday and is passing a test; the market is closed but Elche has the option to sign a replacement for Miguel Linares, in any case Powel won’t be available to face Deportivo as he would be inscribed on next week.

At least the trio composed by winger Jordi Xumetra, plus strikers Ángel and Nicki Bille are fit to play; combined these three players have scored 24 of the 46 goals scored by Elche on this league season (52% of the total).
