GOOD BYE GUARDADO

30 May 2012
Andrés Guardado is joining Valencia CF after five seasons at Deportivo; the move was officially confirmed on Monday, day in which the team was celebrating the promotion. The Mexican winger was an important piece in Depor’s promotion campaign.

It was a strong rumor since January, almost confirmed a month ago when the player confessed that he was leaving, and it was official on Monday: Andrés Guardado leaves Deportivo in order to join Valencia CF. The Mexican winger is ending contract in June and the renewal conversations with his agent never progressed.

On Monday, just when the team was celebrating the promotion, Valencia CF published an article on its website announcing that the player was signing a four-year-deal. Guardado, who has avoided the media throughout the season, didn’t attend to the last part of the celebrations due to personal reasons.

But he talked to Radio Cadena Cope and explaining the reasons why he chose to play for Valencia, ”I’m hopeful about joining Valencia, because is a new challenge: to play the Champions League, fight for la liga… I’m leaving a big club and joining another big one.”

”I´m leaving being one more Deportivista. This club has opened the doors of Europe to me. It will remain there my whole life, the recognition that the Riazor has made to my job. On this season I tried to focus on my job, and the true is that things have been fine. Deportivo and the city are where they belong, so I’m leaving satisfied.” He added

Guardado won’t play anymore for Depor, because there was an agreement to release him now as on the coming days Mexico starts to face the road to the FIFA World Cup 2014, so he’s missing the last matchday on the season: the visit to Villarreal B.

He was signed in 2007 coming from Atlas de Guadalajara with Depor making an important investment: seven million Euros, which represents the last big signing of the club. He had a promising start scoring five goals and giving five assists in his first season in a big European league, but later the injuries lowered his progression.

The relegation on the past season created the dilemma if the club should sell him, especially since he was ending his contract one year later. But there were no proper offers, and president Lendoiro decided that the best was to keep the player at the squad no matter the club was going to lose money in case of not closing his renewal.

And despite the player ended leaving for free, the bet was profitable, because Guardado was an important piece in the promotion campaign of Deportivo to Primera División. A key was the fact that the injuries didn’t affect him on this season; he only missed one game for this reason, plus other five for been concentrated with his national team (including the next one against Villarreal B).

The ex-Atlas man ended the season scoring eleven goals and providing twelve assists, he’s the first player with double-digit marks at Deportivo since Djalminha did it on the season 1999/2000. Actually, he, and Celta’s Fabián Orellana,  are the only players with double-digit marks at Liga Adelante. Guardado was also the seventh player in the league with more shots on target (92), and the leader in terms of successful crosses (119).

RCDLC.com wants to thank Guardado for these five years and wish him good luck in his new adventure
