It’s time to revisit the performance of Deportivo’s players during the season. This second chapter presents the analysis of the four centre midfielders, the two playmakers and the five wingers that played for Depor during the season 2011/12.

The highest notes on the season that has just ended are for with the midfielders, five of them reached or passed the rating of 9.0 proving that they were the most important players during the liga tournament. The following is the review of the performance had by the eleven midfielders that played for Deportivo during the Segunda campaign.

Álex Bergantiños: -Iron Man- (3,589 minutes on the liga season) The only field player in the league that took part in all the 42 matches of the season. The midfielder finally earned a spot at Deportivo after been in the exile for three years. At some point he confessed that he didn’t expect to play too much, in the end he broke the all-time record of minutes on the pitch. Fixed piece for Oltra, Álex was the link between the defenders and the attackers, which explains why he was the player with more successful passes at the team (1,711). He even had time to score three goals, including a brace against CD Guadalajara. He also contributed with three assists.

Juan Dominguez: -The revelation- (2,607) The Pontedeume-born midfielder isn’t a new player at the first team, actually he has been there for the past two years, but it was until now that he has had the chance to show his skills. He was the man behind Valerón in attack and his passes helped to unclog some matches. In past years he was accused of been “too shy”, on this season he unveiled his class starting in the derby of the first round. The 22-year-old player ended the season as a fixed starter, only missing one game in the second round due to a suspension. People was asking for proofs of his quality, and he responded with seven assists (the fourth highest at the team) and four goals added to his tally. Now he has to demonstrate that his skills are worth of Primera División.

Jesús Vázquez: -Joyless- (1,057) Before arriving to Depor this Andalusian midfielder had a very regular career; before joining the Galician outfit he just missed a handful of matches after twelve years in the game, but the picture changed at Deportivo. He was a normal starter at the beginning, looking solid as the partner of Álex, but with the passage of time his game turned to be flat, lacking spark and freshness to assist the attackers. At the middle of the first round he got suspended before the Galician derby, and the ascension of Juan Dominguez sent him directly to the bench. To make things worse he suffered a fibula fracture during a training session after a collision with Fabril’s Marc Martinez. He should be recovered for the start of next season, and should be looking for redemption.

Borja Fernandez: -The Replacement- (725) This was some kind of Cinderella story at Deportivo; he arrived injured and under protests due to his past linked with Celta and ended scoring the winning goal in the derby played at Balaidos. Oltra often used this player as the replacement of Valerón when the score was already in favour of the Galicians, for this reason he was the player with more appearances as a substitute at the team (18). He also scored a goal in the home meeting with Córdoba CF, which was a crucial as Depor was suffering in that clash. Definitely, he’s the kind of player that extends the depth of any team.

Andrés Guardado: -All-round player- (3,077) The RCDLC.com Player of the Season. Twelve years passed before seeing a Depor player scoring and assisting in ten or more opportunities. Guardado did it on this season and it proved to be the main threat in attack at Oltra’s team; he was also the player at Deportivo with more shots on target (92) and more successful crosses (119). He started on the right wing and later moved to his natural side after the entry of Bruno Gama. Perhaps he lowered his performance at the end of the liga tournament as he was too tired, but no one can deny his importance for the cause.

Bruno Gama: -Delightful- (2,153) Without doubt the best signing of the season; he sustained a groin injury during the Teresa Herrera and debuted in liga until the middle point of the first round, at the beginning he was out of shape, but with the passage of the time he demonstrated his great skills: ability to release successful crosses, individual skills for one-on-one plays,, combinative game by the centre and capacity to define the plays. In the end the Portuguese winger scored eight goals and provided eight assists in 29 liga matches; he was the most in-form player in the last stretch of the season and, definitely, after the exit of Guardado, he’s the man to watch ahead of next season at Primera.

Diogo Salomão: -Agile- He added something that Depor has been missing in recent years: speed and unbalance on the wings. The Portuguese is quite different to Guardado, because Salomão is a pure winger made to run across the left side of the pitch eluding any obstacle on his way. He began the season as a fixed starter as he was part of the starting eleven in 13 of the first 14 matches, what happened is that, with the return of Bruno Gama, Oltra opted for the combinative skills of Diogo’s compatriot, so he spent the second half of the season coming out from the bench, more in concrete he was a substitute in 10 of his last 12 games in the liga tournament. Still, he left a positive impression scoring four goals and providing three assists. He should be the replacement of Guardado in case Lendoiro is able to extend his loan spell.
RCDLC.com rating: 8.5

Saul Fernandez: -Overshadowed- (579) The Asturian was the fourth winger in the list of Oltra, so it wasn’t surprising to see him almost without opportunities. He played as a substitute in 8 of the first 12 matches in liga and was even a starter in the first Galician derby, then he reached the pinnacle scoring a brace against Primera outfit UD Levante in Copa Del Rey, but then the decline started; it happened after been sent off in the second-leg with Levante; he left the team with ten men for more than an hour, and clearly Oltra didn’t like it as within the next 25 liga matches he only played 130 minutes. At least he played the full 90 minutes in the last clash with Villarreal B and provided a beautiful assist that meant the winning goal. His role ahead of next season still to be defined.
RCDLC.com rating: 7.0

Pablo Álvarez:Excluded- It was the same case than Saul; The Shark was never among the preferred choices of Oltra and was only used for specific moment when the Valencian coach had casualties on the wings. Without consistency he never demonstrated anything special during the league tournament, but was important in the Copa Del Rey tie against UD Levante, scoring two goals and been the best player in the series; though is also true that he missed a last-minute penalty that should have meant the qualification to the last-32 round.
RCDLC.com rating: 7.0

Juan Carlos Valerón:Rejuvenated-   (2,947) Nobody will discover now the skills of El Flaco, but this was the most complete season of the Canarian veteran since his arrival to Depor twelve years ago. It was the season in which he played more games (39), scored more goals (5) and gave more assists (11). He was the motor of Deportivo at midfield and gave reason to the fans that were asking for a more protagonic role. In some games he seemed tired, but his class still intact. The best part is that football will keep enjoying with him for at least one more year.
RCDLC.com rating: 9.5

Juan Carlos Real: -Promising- (29) It’s hard to analyze the season of a player that just performed for 29 minutes, but the Fabril’s playmaker gave a hint of his skills and daring behavior in attack during the few minutes that he spent on the pitch in the last matchday of the season against Villarreal B. He also left a positive impression during the four Copa matches in which he played. It seems Depor has found something interesting for the future with this player.
