COLOTTO LEAVES DEPOR

23 Jun 2012
The soap opera of the summer is over and Diego Colotto has decided to leave Deportivo in order to sign for RCD Espanyol. The Catalan club was offering more money and a longer contract and the Argentine defender decided to leave after four years at the club.

After all the rumours centre-back Diego Colotto has landed at RCD Espanyol signing a three-year deal with Los Periquitos. Deportivo was trying to renew the contract of the Argentine man and there were a lot of rumours linking the players will several clubs, from Villarreal CF to Mexican Cruz Azul.

In the end Colotto will keep playing with a Blanquiazul shirt, but it won’t be the one of Depor, instead is the shield of Catalan outfit RCD Espanyol.  Lendoiro was offering a two-year renewal with the option of extending the contract for one more year in case of playing a certain number of matches, while Espanyol offered a three-year contract plus better wages.

Colotto arrived to Deportivo for the season 2008/09 after Lendoiro agreed to pay €2.5 million to Atlas de Guadalajara. The operation was closed until the last day of the transfer window; actually it was the last operation accepted by la liga (LFP) during the summer window. It explains why the Argentine defender had so many problems to adapt and why he only played 11 games on the league campaign.

But later he gained a spot at the centre of the defense alongside Albert Lopo and was a starter choice for Lotina within the following two seasons. He decided to stay despite Depor suffered the relegation on the past season, and it was a good call as he was an important piece at defender after the arrival of coach José Luis Oltra.

The ex-Atlas defender as the sixth man at Segunda with more blocks (22) and fifteenth in terms of clearances (123). Constant reference in the aerial game he also scored three goals on the Segunda tournament, from the first one in liga against RC Recreativo to the agonizing goal against Elche CF (4-3), two goals that meant three points.

Now, his departure means that Deportivo needs to sign two new centre backs, Aythami Artiles and Ze Castro are staying, but the club is planning to loan out David Rochela, so Lendoiro needs to complete two incorporations in order to fill up the gaps as Oltra’s idea is to have four centre backs for the new season.
