SEARCHING FOR A CENTRE BACK (PART II)

04 Jul 2012
Last week Depor Sport presented a list of four centre backs that were on target; then on Monday the same source printed the name of five candidates controlled by Jorge Mendes, a list that was reduced to three men on Tuesday.

One week before starting the pre-season the club is still trying to find the reinforcements for the left-back position, the centre of the defense, the left wing and the centre of the attack. For now the attention is focused in the new central defender, though the club could end signing two centre backs if Rochela goes out loaned. Depor Sport published on Tuesday a list of three candidates to fill the gap left by Colotto; the common thing is that the trio is controlled by Jorge Mendes.

These three players are Daniel Carriço (23, Sporting CP), Sidnei Rechel da Silva (22, SL Benfica) and Junior Rodriguez (28, Sporting CP). The trio was part of a list of five names published by the same source just one day before.

Junior Rodriguez is a Peruvian player that barely participated with his team on last season; he spent the season injured and just played seven games at the Portuguese league. Before joining Sporting CP he made a great career at SC Braga helping his team to qualify to the UEFA Champions League.

Daniel Carriço is a promising Portuguese defender that lately has been performing as a centre midfielder; despite his young age he was named one of the team’s captains at Sporting CP and was also named as one of the best players in the UEFA European Under-19 tournament played in 2007, this despite his team didn’t pass the first round.

Sidnei da Silva is a Brazilian defender that’s considered a “tank” (height 1.85); he came out from Sport Club Internacional and was bought by SL Benfica, team that paid €5 million for 50% of his sports rights, later the Portuguese club got the other half of Sidnei's rights for €2 million, and GestiFute (the company of Jorge Mendes) acquired the rights to receive 30% of the profit. Last season he played loaned at Beşiktaş J.K. and SL Benfica is now studying the option of a new loan spell, this time in Spain. Other Primera team looking from him is Real Zaragoza.

Another interesting thing about Sidnei is that he was part of a previous list released by Depor Sport regarding the first four candidates for the spot at the centre of the defense. The other three were Marc Torrejón (26), Alejandro Arribas (23) and Carlos Cuellar (30)

To mention that two of these players are already out of Depor’s plans; and it’s that Carlos Cuellar already signed for Premier League outfit Sunderland, while Arribas was already presented at la liga’s club Atletico Osasuna.
