MATCH REPORT: PONFERRADINA 0 – DEPORTIVO 1

26 Jul 2012
New 0-1 win for Deportivo and once again the team left a mixed impression after suffering in the second half against a recently promoted club to Segunda A. Riki scored his third goal in the pre-season, while Bruno Gama missed a penalty.

Oltra chose to play with a starting formation that only had one player coming out from Fabril: centre back Uxio. The rest were players that were at the club on the past season, except from new signings André Santos and Pizzi. Lux was the starting goalie, Laure performed at the right side of the defense, Ayoze was at the left, while Aythami joined Uxio at the centre of the defense.

André Santos and Juan Dominguez were the two pivotes in the formation; the right wing was for Saul Fernandez, Pizzi attacked from the left, Valerón was the playmaker and the central attacker was Riki.

The rival for the meeting was SD Ponferradina, club that’s back at liga Adelante after a season at Segunda División B. The match was arranged to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the club from Ponferrada (Castile & Leon). The team coached by ex-Depor Claudio Barragán was presenting Mariano Gonzalez Maroto ‘Nano’ as one if its new signings.

Like it happened in the past clash with Racing Vilalbés, Deportivo didn’t leave a positive impression, mainly at the moment of attacking. The team missed accuracy and spark, but showed solidity at the back, at least during the first part.

The first minutes were pretty active; Riki was close to score at minute 1 after collecting a pass from Pizzi, but he missed the target. The locals responded with a solo-play of Nano that ended in nothing as the attacker couldn’t resolve the play.

With the pass of the minutes Depor gained the ball possession while Ponferradina was standing at its side of the pitch waiting for the opportunity to release a counterattack. And the goal didn’t last to arrive for the visitors, Saul drilled a perfect pass to Riki and the Madrilenian scored the lonely goal with a wonderful heel touch.

´Ponfe’ tried to react, but it was Deportivo the side that was close to reply; a great pass of Valerón left Riki alone against local goalie Quintana, but he missed the target (20’). The game was fluid as the ball was passing quickly through midfield, but there weren’t too many scoring opportunities, perhaps a result caused by the pouring rain that was falling at the middle of the half –also lightening-.

The best chance in the half for the locals came at minute 34; midfielder Carlos Ruiz surprised with a quick play in which he assisted Alfredo Juan Mayordomo ‘Mayor’, but the striker missed the target from close range. The last fifteen minutes were complicated for both teams due to the heavy rain. Still, the locals were looking more dangerous with their counterattacks, and at this point Uxio emerged as a key piece since he was cutting the attempts with a refreshing accuracy.

For the second part, Oltra made ten modifications; only Lux stayed defending the goal; the rest were substitutes, including Fabril’s Victor Diaz, who attacked from the left wing,  and Marcos Caridad, who was playing as central defender. New signing Evaldo was performing at the left-back position. It called the attention to see Diego Seoane performing as a central defender, this since Aythami was the lonely centre back available for the clash.

Ponferradina dominated the actions within the whole half; at minute 47 Alder Lafuente, one of the most active players at the local team, was close to score with a crossing attempt that missed the target. The visitors made a couple of interesting plays, mainly starting n the boots of Juan Carlos, but Depor failed to create a clear scoring opportunity.

At minute 66, Ponfe had a great chance to score the equalizer; it was a counterattack action that ended with striker Adolfo Enríquez García ‘Fofo’ attempting from close range, but Lux was there to make the save. This action awoke the game of the locals, which was paralyzed after the opportunities within the first minutes, and they pushed strongly for the equalizer. At minute 69, Lafuente was close to score with a corner-kick that almost surprised Lux. Five minutes later Fofo was close to score again with a shot that passed close to the far post of the Argentine goalie.

But it was Depor the side that had the last scoring opportunity in the game, and it was a big one as Samuel Fernandez committed a penalty over Juan Carlos. The defender was sent off, but Bruno Gama missed the chance to increase the lead as keeper Orlando Quintana guessed the shot to save his team.

Third victory in the pre-season, but the team didn’t leave appositive impression, the best players for the visitors were Uxio Marcos and German Lux. The fourth friendly match will take place on Sunday as Deportivo visits Sporting Gijón, another recently relegated club to Segunda A (Ribadeo, 19h00 CET).
