PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO – ATLETICO (TH)

11 Aug 2012
Depor ends the pre-season 2012/13 with the dispute of the 67th edition of the Teresa Herrera; the rival is Atletico Madrid, another tough Primera opponent that represents the last exam before the debut in liga. There are high expectations on the lineup of Oltra.

The pre-season 2012/13 ends today for Deportivo La Coruña as the Galicians are playing the last game before debuting in the Primera tournament. It’s the traditional Teresa Herrera tournament, this time disputed against Atletico Madrid (Riazor, 21h00 CET). This is the 67th edition of this Cup and, as it happens since 2009, it will be one single match instead of the traditional quadrangular format.

Atletico Madrid has participated in this tournament in twelve opportunities; it won the trophy six times, only Deportivo (16) and Real Madrid (8) have more cups, while Atletico was the runner-up in other five occasions. The last time the Madrilenians won the Cup was in 2009 cutting a rally of nine straight wins of the Galicians (4-3 in the penalty shootout). Deportivo searches to win the tournament for the first time within the last four years.

Beyond the statistics, there are high expectations on the starting lineup that Oltra will use in the game; in the previous nine friendly matches in the summer the Valencian coach has basically distributed the minutes among all the players at the team, and this is the opportunity to test the starting eleven that will face Osasuna on next week, this has part of the first matchday in liga. In any case, Oltra already announced that the lineup for this game won’t necessary be the same one that will be used against the Navarrans.

For the meeting Oltra is having five casualties due to injury reasons. Diogo Salomão (groin) and Ze Castro (quadriceps) have been out for the whole pre-season stage and it’s difficult to see them available for the debut in liga. Laure (dislocated shoulder) will miss the game with Osasuna as the Madrilenian defender will be out for, at least, one more week. Finally, Ayoze Diaz (hamstring) and Jesús Vázquez (lumbago)  aren’t part of the team that will face Atletico Madrid, but they will be training with the team on next week, therefore the duo will be available for the debut in liga against the Navarrans.

Juan Dominguez (quadriceps) is already working at the top and was picked for the clash after been out in recent weeks. Meanwhile, left-back defender Evaldo and striker Nélson Oliveira (muscular) were training apart on Friday, but the duo made it into the final list of picked players.

On Friday, Riki was talking of the importance of this meeting, “We want to end the pre-season with positive sensations facing an important rival in both Spanish and international football. I believe it will be a pretty game to watch, especially as we are debuting in front of the fans. So, we want to make a nice game and come out reinforced for the debuting match in liga, which will also take place at home.”

List of picked players (21): Aranzubia, Lux (goalkeepers); Manuel Pablo, Marchena, Roderick, Aythami, Ínsua, Seoane, Evaldo (defenders); Abel Aguilar,  Álex Bergantiños, André Santos, Juan Domínguez, Valerón, Juan Carlos, Saul, Pizzi, Bruno Gama (midfielders); Riki, Bodipo and Nélson Oliveira (strikers).

ATLETICO MADRID: ALL THE STARS ARE IN
The Madrilenians debut in liga visiting Levante UD and they also see this game as the final test before facing the league competition. For the meeting coach Diego Simeone has picked all his star players, including Colombian Radamel Falcao, who last season was considered by the UEFA as the fifth best player in Europe -just behind Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi and Iniesta-

Former Depor’s players Adrian López and Filipe Luis are also part of the trip and will probably be starters. Atletico Madrid is arriving to the league tournament after winning the UEFA Europa League, but also after failing to qualify to the Champions League, now the goal is to end among the best four clubs in the league and qualify for the biggest tournament in the continent.

So, far Atletico has made three signings: centre back Cata Diaz, right winger Cristian ‘Cebolla’ Rodríguez and centre midfielder Emre Belözoglu, the three of them are also part of the team traveling to A Coruña.

Striker Diego Costa, who is a target of Deportivo, isn’t part of the group due to a knee injury. Two young players that are part of the team are playmaker Óliver Torres and centre midfielder Jorge Resurrección Merodio ‘Koke’, the first one was part of the Spanish team that won the last U-19 Euro tournament and the second is coming after playing with Spain in the Summer Olympic games held in London.

19-year-old striker Borja Galán from Atletico B is also part of the list, this since Simeone only has Adrian and Falcao as the only available strikers. It’s expected that the Argentine coach will present a 4-3-3 lineup, with Arda Turan joining Adrian and Falcao up front, something that has been tested throughout this week on the training pitch.

List of picked players (22): Asenjo, Courtois, Joel (goalkeepers); Sìlvio, Filipe, Miranda, Cata Diaz, Pulido, Godín (defenders); Tiago, Juanfran, Gabi, Arda Turan, Emre, Raúl García, Koke, Óliver, Cristian Rodríguez, Mario Suárez (strikers); Borja Galán, Adrián and Falcao (strikers)
