THE WEIRDNESS OF LASSAD

07 Sep 2012
Lassad Nouioui has left Deportivo after five years in A Coruña; he arrived for Fabril and was later promoted to the first squad. After strong declarations against the club the striker is ending at Celtic Glasgow, in the middle a weird incident with Levante.

The weird case of Lassad Nouioui wrote another chapter as the striker was presented on Thursday with Celtic FC. The Tunisian player has drastically changed his situation passing from been an unemployed to now be one of the few men that can pressure of playing the UEFA Champions League.

But before there were several contradictions that converted his exit into the weird soap opera of the summer; just two weeks ago he hammered the club for not doing enough in order to secure his continuity, this after he felt disappointed with the renewal offer of Deportivo, “My agent and I didn’t accept the proposition coming from Depor, because the offer was too low. I do believe that the club didn’t make an effort in the attempt to see me staying. I wanted to stay; I told everybody before, but not under any condition. There’s one thing called respect. I can’t be one of the players with more minutes, besides been the top-scorer, and later sign a renewal contract earning less money than the half of the team.”

Those were his words during an interview at Terra Deportes; all of this after months of silence in which the club was unable to contact him. President Lendoiro quickly responded to these allegations stating that “We offered the triple to Lassad and warned his agent that we weren’t going to offer the same conditions in the future. Now I wasn’t aware of these declarations and won’t offer the same to the player, because we spent months without knowing of him.”

The first twist in this story appeared on last week as, apparently, the agent of the player, Karim Aklil, contacted the club as he wanted to rejoin Depor. But the club was already searching for other options and the agent ended signed a contract with Levante UD at 2AM on September 1, and just a couple of hours later the player showed up in Glasgow in order to sign for Celtic FC, a much attractive option as the Scottish Premier League club will also play the UEFA Champions League on the current season.

Levante’s officials were furious and attempted to present a demand against Lassad, but they discovered that it isn’t possible as the papers were signed by Karim Aklil and not by the striker, so they are now studying the option of suing the agent, who already stated that will sue the player as a consequence of the mess.

Lassad during his presentation at Celtic park

Meanwhile, Lassad was presented on Thursday at Celtic Park and once again changed his story saying that he was negotiating his arrival to Celtic since a while ago, "A few months ago I was already in contact with the club, and then again a few days before the deadline. From that time I decided to come here and I am really looking forward a big adventure with Celtic." About the problem with the agent he stated that, "He is no longer my agent. I have worked with him in the past but this agent had nothing to do with the dealings with Celtic."

In any case the 26-year-old striker is not coming back to Deportivo; and the arrival of Lassad to A Coruña was also unique; he was part of a group of three players on trial at Deportivo B during the winter window of the season 2007/08; despite he got injured during the trial, coach Tito Ramallo liked the player and asked him to return. He joined Fabril and scored eight goals in fourteen matches at Segunda División B; one season later he netted the same number of goals at Depor B and had the chance to debut at Primera.

For the season 2009/10 he was promoted on a permanent basis signing a three-year contract, but his hamstring injuries slowed his progress and just played in the half of the 38 matchdays of that Primera season: He surpassed this problem and completed 33 appearances in the following Liga campaign, though his five goals weren’t enough to save Depor from Segunda. The Tunisian attacker completed his last year at the club being the Pichichi of Depor at Liga Adelante scoring fourteen goals, plus other four in Copa Del Rey.
