OLTRA’S FIXED LINEUP

08 Sep 2012
Deportivo is the only team at Primera División that has repeated the lineup in the first three matchdays; the outcome has been positive as the Galician team remains undefeated and practicing an attractive football, though with problems at defense.

At the end of the pre-season one of the of the most criticized issues to coach José Luis Oltra was the fact that he didn’t have a fixed lineup after all the tests made in the friendly games; one month later it turns out that he’s the only coach at liga BBVA that has repeated the same lineup in the first three matchdays. In the end the exact number of straight lineups is four as he also used the same squad for the Teresa Herrera match against Atletico Madrid.

Only other four coaches repeated the lineup between matchday 01 & 02: Joaquín Caparrós (RCD Mallorca), Miroslav Djukic (Real Valladolid), Míchel (Sevilla CF) and Mauricio Pellegrino (Valencia CF). But by matchday 03 all these four trainers had already made changes.

The fact of been repeating the lineups doesn’t guarantee the success, but it can be interpreted as a consequence of the coach’s complacency with the work done during both the training and the matches. In the case of Deportivo the results are out there as the Galician side as added five points in three matches, including a comeback at Mestalla and to see the team undefeated so far. Still, there are big doubts in how the team defends, mainly by the sides.

It could also be a double-edge sword as the players that aren’t entering into the coach’s plans could start to feel demotivated, while the starters can end believing they don’t anything to probe. But Oltra will surely make changes in the coming weeks due to suspensions and injuries and therefore he needs the rest of the players to feel committed to the team, and that first modification could arrive on matchday 04 as right winger Bruno Gama is doubtful with a muscular injury.

But Oltra was always prone to use the same lineup following his philosophy of always putting his best players on the pitch; last season the Valencian coach was unable to repeat the lineup on the first three matchdays; for matchday 02 he had the casualties of Guardado and Colotto, the first picked by Mexico’s national team and the second was injured, and by matchday 03 he lost Manuel Pablo due to a muscular problem that sidelined him for almost the entire season.

But later he repeated the same lineup between matchdays 04, 05 and 06 facing Barcelona B (3-2), CE Sabadell (2-1) and AD Alcorcón (0-4):  Aranzubia - Laure, Colotto, Aythami, Ayoze - Álex Bergantiños, Jesús Vázquez - Guardado, Valerón, Salomao – Lassad .

Oltra’s record on last season was to repeat the same squad in five straight liga games; it happened between matchdays 15 and 19: UD Almeria (3-1), Real Valladolid (0-0), CD Numancia (3-1), UD Las Palmas (1-0) and CD Xérez (2-1). At the time the lineup was: Aranzubia – Laure, Colotto, Ze Castro, Ayoze – Álex Bergantiños, Juan Domínguez – Bruno Gama, Valerón, Guardado – Lassad.
