At the end of the pre-season there were a lot of concerns regarding the defensive sector of Deportivo La Coruña; a few of them have been cleared out in this start of season, but some stay there, especially the problems at the sides.

If there was a sector that was alarming Depor’s fans at the beginning of the season it was the defense; the lagoons shown throughout the pre-season, the endless problems at the sides, plus the exit of Diego Colotto and the injury problems of Ze Castro were causing concern and many people were expecting for the worse. In the end there are mixing readings after the first three matchdays as some of the doubts have been cleared out, while others remain the same.

And it’s that Deportivo have had a strong start in la liga adding five points in three games and been one of the seven teams that remain undefeated at Liga BBVA. Still, the team has left doubts on its defensive performance. After clinching a clean sheet against CA Osasuna the Galician outfit ended allowing three goals in forty-five minutes facing Valencia CF. It improved a lot in the second part disputed at Mestalla to later face new complications at the Riazor hosting a Getafe that played on counterattack.

The goal is perhaps the best news, with Daniel Aranzubia as the undisputed starter and with German Lux as a luxury replacement.  The first concern was to see the response of the defensive sector after the exit of Colotto, the leader in recent seasons, and the true is that this issue was quickly solved as veteran Carlos Marchena has claimed the role leaving a positive impression.

Another concern was the behavior of Aythami Artiles, called to be a starter due to the injury of Ze Castro. The Canarian centre back has had a solid performance in the first three matchdays despite the always present criticism against him.

But the sectors where the problems remain are the sides; with Laure out injured captain Manuel Pablo has been the starter at the right; the Canarian has had solid performances in this beginning of season, mainly in the game against Valencia, but it can’t be denied that he has also faced big problems defending his sector.

The endless drama is the left side; in recent years no one has been able to cover the hole left by Filipe Luis; Canarian Ayoze remains at the club, but haven’t played yet on this season. Evaldo Fabiano landed during the summer and there a lot of criticism towards him, Tiago Pinto just arrived to La Coruña and it still to be seen if he can solve the problem as now the rivals seem to focus their effort on this side of the defense.

Neither the defenders can be the only ones pointed out for the problems at the back.  In the past game with Getafe CF it was noticed that the defenders had big problems trying to contain the counterattacks of the Madrilenians, they were constantly misplaced and part of the problem was the endless errors passing the ball –Depor lost the ball in 115 opportunities, the highest number in this start of season- and this problem began with the midfielders and attackers as Pizzi (15), Bruno Gama (11) and Riki (10) were losing the ball.

All these accuracies must be fixed if Deportivo wants to keep the good straight, especially taking in mind that tough games are coming as Depor is facing Sevilla CF, Real Madrid and Barcelona FC in the coming weeks. The good news is that Oltra is finally recovering Ze Castro and Laure, which expands his options at the moment of preparing the lineups.
