OLTRA & THE 4-2-3-1

20 Sep 2012
José Luis Oltra already fulfilled 50 games at Deportivo and he reached the mark playing with a 4-2-3-1 scheme; his trademark since his arrival to Depor, but also the trademark at the club within the last fourteen years.

It is interesting to notice that José Luis Oltra has always relied in the 4-2-3-1 scheme, but neither is a surprise as this formation has been the trademark of the four coaches that have passed through Depor’s bench within the last fourteen years. And it’s that since the season 1998/99 the club has played 540 liga games, and in 417 (77% of the total) the initial formation was a 4-2-3-1 figure. The following is a resume of what the last four coaches have made regarding their initial formations.

IRURETA
The Basque man, the only one that has conquered a liga title for Depor, spent seven years in A Coruña, but he only used five schemes at his starting formations. He was the one that installed the 4-2-3-1 after the famous 5-2-2-1 of Arsenio Iglesias. Jabo used this figure in the 87% of the 266 liga matches that he completed at the Galician club.

Just like Oltra did on Sunday, Irureta presented a 4-2-3-1 figure in 46 straight liga encounters; this occurred between matchday 01 of the season 2003/04 & matchday 08 of the season 2004/05. He played with a 4-4-2 the last game of the season 2002/03 (2-1 Vs. Espanyol), and with a 4-1-4-1 matchday 09 of the season 2004/05 (0-0 Vs. Albacete).

Perhaps the main characteristic of Irureta was that he always liked to switch the positions of his players in order to fit them into the figure; in this sense strikers like Makaay and Luque were reconverted into wingers, Makaay even performed as a playmaker in some meetings, while Fran was moved from the left wing to midfield territory. Later, as the game was passing, he was changing the figure according to the circumstances, sometimes playing with a 4-4-2 and even with a 4-3-2-1

CAPARRÓS
The Andalusian man only spent two years at Deportivo, but he used one more starting formation compared to Jabo. In any case his base was always a 4-2-3-1, draw that he implemented in 63% of the 76 liga games that he spent at Depor. He also characterized his job for reconverting the positions of the players, like the fact of moving Coloccini from the centre of the defense to midfield territory. He was always criticized due to his defensive mentality.

LOTINA
He can be referred as the “master of the formations”, and it’s that he used eight different schemes in the four seasons that he lived in A Coruña. He rescued the 5-2-2-1 that was the base of the Superdepor of Arsenio Iglesias, but his more used scheme was always the 4-2-3-1, a formation that he put on the fiend in the 60% of the 152 liga matches disputed by Depor under his command.

Lotina, like his predecessors, was known for switching the positions of his players, but also for constantly switching the draws during the games; actually there were meetings in which he used three different formations. These constant changes led to nothing and Depor ended at Segunda after two decades at the elite of Spanish football.

OLTRA
Jose Luis Oltra kept the tradition of the previous three coaches and the base of his starting formations was always the 4-2-3-1, actually this is the only scheme that he has used so far (64 straight liga meetings). The big difference with the previous coaches was that he doesn’t like to switch the positions of the players; he only made punctual modifications like using Borja as a centre back when the team was facing an injury crisis, or to put side defender Ayoze as a winger in order to help in the defensive tasks at some specific moments, as it happened in the last game against Granada CF.

The key in the 4-2-3-1 picture has been Valerón, because El Flaco has been the starting playmaker in 40 of the 46 liga matches that he has disputed at the club. In the other six games the role was for Juan Dominguez, Lassad, Camuñas and Pablo Álvarez.
