Juan Carlos Valerón is about to become into the fifth player at Deportivo that completes 300 or more league appearances with the first team. For now he has worn the Blanquiazul shirt in 390 official meetings, soon he will reach the 400.

The Santiago Bernabéu could witness how Juan Carlos Valerón makes history becoming into the fifth player that performs in 300 league matches wearing the shirt of Deportivo. This is the 14th season of el Flaco at Depor and so far he has played 299 liga matches scoring 23 goals plus providing 54 assists, been booked in 10 opportunities and without seeing any red card.

Among the curiosities with the Canarian playmaker is that 15 of his 54 assists in liga (28% of the total) were provided to Diego Tristán, without doubt his best ‘customer’ at the first team. Meanwhile, his 23 goals were scored against 20 different clubs; the only three clubs against whom he scored two goals were RC Celta, RCD Mallorca and Recreativo de Huelva.

The Canarian never scored braces and neither hat-tricks, because his specialty were the assists; after all El Mago is the player at Depor with more assists since the season 2000/01; his 54 assists are just followed by Guardado (32), Victor (29), Sergio (17), Fran (16), Munitis (13) and Djalminha (12).

The other four players that have performed in 300 or more league games with Deportivo are: Fran (550), Mauro Silva (369), Manuel Pablo (330) and Donato (303). Of this list Mauro Silva and Donato played all their games at Primera.

Fran completed 435 at Primera and 115 at Segunda; Manuel Pablo has played 322 at Primera and 8 at Segunda, while Valerón has completed 260 at Primera and 39 at Segunda. Always remembering that both Manuel Pablo and Valerón missed several matches as they spent a lot of time injured; in the case of El Flaco he only played seven league games within the years 2006 and 2008 due to two serious knee injuries.

In a general view, Valerón has completed 390 official matches at Deportivo: 260 at Primera, 39 at Segunda, 25 at Copa Del Rey, 2 in the Spanish Supercopa, 46 in the UEFA Champions League, 10 in the UEFA Cup and 8 in Intertoto. So, on this same season he will probably pass the barrier of the 400 official presentations with Depor. Only three men have played 400 or more official games at the club: Fran (636), Manuel Pablo (408) and Mauro Silva (401).

On Tuesday, El Flaco talked to reporters at Abegondo and he was asked about the fact of reaching the mark of 300 liga games at Depor, and he said that, ”It’s a pretty thing to reach this number of games. You feel proud of been here and to do it with the shirt of Deportivo.”

Meanwhile, newspaper La Voz de Galicia talked with his first coach at Depor, Javier Irureta, and he remembered the arrival of the Canarian player, ”When he came it was in order to compete with Djalminha, which was a big thing in front of the fans; both players could have played together, but that was a handicap against him, in any case he surpassed the issue and earned the confidence and everybody’s love.”

”From those years the first thing I remember is that he was a great player, with vision to play and a great talent for football. Besides, he’s a magnificent person, a great factor for the integration to the group, a very good man with a clear mind, always ready to sacrifice himself for the good of the group.” Jabo added.

Finally, the player with more games at Depor and former team mate of Valerón, Fran, was also talking of him, ”When he was at Mallorca you can already saw his potential, and when he started to train with us people were able to notice that he was a great player, a different footballer and with an extraordinary quality. He was also a humble person for the way he always treated all the team mates at the changing room.”
