THINKING OF LEVANTE

16 Nov 2012
Oltra recovers some key players, but now has a problem on the left wing as he loses Pizzi due to suspension. Levante is coming from a verbal fight against Real Madrid, but trying to keep a cool mind in an important week for them.

Deportivo is recovering four players ahead of the game against Levante UD (Riazor, Sunday, 12h00 CET). Centre back Carlos Marchena and left-back Ayoze Diaz joined the trainings on Wednesday after missing the clash against Real Zaragoza due to a hamstring problem. Both men were starters in past games and are available for Sunday.

Centre midfielder Abel Aguilar has been out within the past month due to a muscle injury and is training alongside the group since Monday. Andalusian Jesús Vázquez is also back on trainings after been out for the past two weeks with a concussion suffered in the Copa match against RCD Mallorca.

Therefore the only two players that will miss the game against Levante due to injury reasons are left winger Diogo Salomão (Soleus) and striker Nélson Oliveira (thigh). The winger will remain out for a couple of weeks, while it isn’t known yet if the attacker will be available before the end of the year.

But coach José Luis Oltra is having a problem on the left wing, because Pizzi was sent off in the past game at the La Romareda and has been suspended for one match. With Salomão out too, it means that the coach will have to play with Javier Camuñas on that position; actually he already tested during the trainings with the Madrilenian man playing on that position. In the meantime, Pizzi debuted with Portugal’s senior squad during the 2-2 draw visiting Gabon. The winger scored the first goal for his country through a penalty.

At Levante, coach Juan Ignacio Martínez is only having the doubts of Senegalese midfielder Pape Diop and Greek striker Theofanis Gekas; Diop just completed part of Wednesday’s training due to a muscle injury, while Gekas is dragging a back problem from past weeks and on Wednesday he was training at the gym. Striker Obafemi Martins was a starter in the friendly game between Nigeria and Venezuela (3-1) and will join the group until Friday.

The Valencian team is arriving to A Coruña after an exhausting week; on Sunday they lost 1-2 at home facing Real Madrid, and there has been a war of declarations as Cristiano Ronaldo suffered a deep cut in the eyebrow after an elbow of defender David Navarro. It was even reported a fight inside the changing room between players from both clubs.

Luckily the Competition Committee didn’t suspend anyone, though the Referee Technical Committee has publicly denounced defender Juanlu and midfielder Pape Diop after both players said nasty things about the referee when both men were interviewed after the game.

It has been hard for them to stay on the sidelines of the conflict, but the point is that the Granota team must remain focused; and it’s that it’s an important week for them. They defend the sixth position at the standing at the Riazor, and next Thursday they visit Swedish club Helsingborgs IF, a game that could give them an historic qualification to the knockout stage of the UEFA Europa League.
