In eight opportunities Oltra has replaced a centre-back with an offensive player and the point is that he never was able to obtain a positive result. More productive has been the replacement of a centre midfielder with a striker: 6 victories in 10 games.

José Luis Oltra has been under fire all week long after the polemic substitution that he ordered during the 2-3 defeat at home facing Real Betis. The score was 2-2 and he ordered the entry of a striker –Bodipo- for a defender –Roderick- the result was that the team lost the balance and the game, which just complicated Deportivo’s situation at the standings.

It wasn’t the first opportunity in which the Valencian coach makes this kind of ‘suicidal’ modification; actually it was the eighth occasion in which he ordered the entry of an offensive player claiming the spot of a defender in the attempt to increase the options up front, this since the arrival of the Valencian trainer to the club, and the results have been negative as his team never managed to obtain a positive result.

Last season Oltra made that kind of change in six opportunities, starting in the home defeat against Hércules CF (0-1); he replaced Manuel Pablo with Lassad at half-time and Depor played with a 3-5-2 figure. The team improved, but it wasn’t enough to change the result.

In matchday 08, Oltra did the same as Deportivo was losing 0-1 at CD Alcoyano, this after Riki replaced Diego Seoane (58’); Depor had more presence in attack, but didn’t create scoring opportunities and ended allowing a new goal (0-2).

The ‘suicidal’ change was about to work for the meeting in matchday 14. The Galician team was losing 1-2 at Elche CF, then Depor’s tactician ordered the entry of Valerón replacing Colotto (63’), just one minute later Deportivo scored the equalizer, but three minutes later it allowed a new goal to end losing 2-3.

Same script and outcome at matchday 26; Depor were losing 0-1 and Oltra sent Xisco to replace Colotto (63’) when the team was visiting CE Sabadell. Nothing happened. Same score in matchday 32 as the Galician outfit was visiting FC Girona, this time the modification was made five minutes before the final whistle as Lassad replaced Morel.

Then, on matchday 40, Depor was approaching to promotion and suffered a painful 2-3 defeat visiting Xérez CD. Depor were winning 2-1 by minute 55, but two goals from the rival within minutes 55 & 81 changed the picture; at minute 83’ Xisco replaced Ayoze in a desperate move to equalize the game, but it didn’t work.

The last two opportunities in which an offensive player replaced a defender occurred with the team already at Primera División. The first in the 1-2 defeat at Rayo Vallecano (matchday 07); after a poor first half the Galicians were losing 1-2, at minute 75 Oltra sent Oliveira to replace Evaldo; it didn’t help and the team lost the match.  And then what occurred on Sunday, which was the only opportunity in which Oltra made the ‘suicidal’ change when the team wasn’t losing the game.

Off course this is a desperate measure as the team was trying to equalize and win the games, but the point is that there is another kind of offensive change that Oltra usually makes and that has brought better outcomes: to replace a centre midfielder with a striker. He did it in ten opportunities since his arrival to the club and only lost two times: 0-2 at UD Almeria on the past season and 0-2 Vs. Levante UD on the present Primera campaign. In the remaining eight games Deportivo clinched six victories and two draws.

An example of this particular modification what happened last season during the home meeting against Real Murcia. The score was 1-1 and, at minute 63, Lassad replaced Juan Dominguez, just one minute later Riki scored the second goal for the locals and Depor ended winning 3-1.

The other matches in which Oltra replaced a centre midfielder with a striker were: 2-2 Vs. Gimnástic Tarragona, 3-2 Vs. Girona CF; 0-0 at Real Murcia; 2-1 Vs. Villarreal B; 3-1 Vs. Real Murcia; 4-3 Vs. Elche and 2-1 at Gimnástic Tarragona. In all these meetings Depor were losing or drawing and the modification was helpful in order to change the final outcome, with the exception of the goalless draw in Murcia.
