OLTRA, IN OR OUT?

25 Dec 2012
It isn’t clear if Oltra will be sat on the bench for the next game in liga against Malaga CF. The club’s officials keep silence as they analyze if the Valencian coach should be sacked or not. Domingos Paciência has been pointed as a possible successor.

Deportivo are living their worst season at Primera División, lying at the bottom of the standings and leaving a poor impression on the pitch. The worst part is that the team seems to be going down with the passing of time, from the positive sensations left after the games against CA Osasuna and Valencia CF to the sorrow and impotence of the defeats against Atletico Madrid and RCD Espanyol.

As it always happens the first one to blame is the coach, and in this case the situation is more compromised for José Luis Oltra, because the Valencian coach faced similar situations at CD Tenerife and Almeria UD and he never found the way to fix the problems, as result of this both clubs ended at Segunda División. So, it isn’t strange to find out the fans and journalists believe that Oltra is a good coach for Segunda, but not good enough for Primera.

The fans lost the patience since some weeks ago, the proof are the whistles after the home game against Real Betis and the continuous criticism towards the coach and the players. President Augusto César Lendoiro and his advisors are pretty aware of these feelings and it is now know that they have been discussing the possible destitution of Oltra since one month ago.

Lendoiro is not the kind of president that fires the coach after the first signs of danger, after all since his arrival to the club, twenty-five years ago, only eight coaches have sat at the bench of the first team, and only three of them were fired at the middle of a season. Still, the situation lived with Lotina two seasons may be changing the attitude of the president.

It’s at this point where the speculations begin; it is know that after Friday’s shareholders meeting Lendoiro and his board of directors had a meeting and that some advisors of the president suggested the destitution of the coach.  On that same night he had a meeting with Jorge Mendes, another ally that suggested the exit of the coach. Lendoiro himself avoided to talk of the subject during the shareholders meetings, something that just increased the rumours.

During the week newspapers La Voz de Galicia, La Opinión A Coruña and Sportpaper Deporte Campeón speculated that Oltra could be fired in the coming days, these three sources even wrote the name of the candidate number one in order to replace him: Domingos Paciência, a 43-year-old coach that took SC Braga to the final of the UEFA Europa League and that currently is free after a disappointing spell at Sporting CP.

The Portuguese man is represented by Jorge Mendes and knows several of the players at Depor, like André Santos, something that would make easier his arrival to the Galician club. The Portuguese coach talked to La Voz de Galicia during the week; he didn’t want to admit any contact with Depor, but neither denied his interest in coaching in Spain.

”Truly I met some of the players [at Depor] and the Spanish league interests me, but there are a lot of Portuguese players there and it’s the best tournament in the world, so many people are interested. For now all I can say is that I have been stopped for a long time and want to return to train now.” Paciencia told to La Voz de Galicia

Other sources like Radio Onda Cero informed that other candidate for the job could be Marcelino García Toral, the former coach of Racing Santander, Real Zaragoza and Sevilla CF, and who was close to join Depor before the signing of Lotina, but his agent, Eugenio Botas, denied it during a phone conversation with newspaper La Voz de Galicia; ”There’s nothing. We haven’t had any contact with Deportivo.” The agent said.

The club maintains silence on the future of Oltra, which is something revealing as normally Lendoiro has always supported the previous coaches when they faced similar situations. At this point the only thing for sure is if something would happen it will happen on this week. The first team returns to train on Monday and by then the name of the coach should be clear. If Oltra is able to stay in the job then he will stay under a lot of pressure, especially if Deportivo fail to achieve the three points in the first game of 2013 hosting Malaga CF.
