Deportivo’s coaches have been forced to make fifteen substitutions in liga caused by the injuries of the players. Riki is at the top of the list with six followed by Ze Castro with two. Some of these problems had a direct impact in the score.

Another factor that has affected Deportivo on this season is the injuries sustained by the players during the matches. After 26 games coaches Oltra, Domingos and Fernando Vázquez were forced to make fifteen substitutions due to injury cases. Perhaps in some of the matches these setbacks didn’t have a direct impact in the final score, but in six games the situation was different as the injuries affected the plans of the coaches and therefore the outcome.

Riki is at the top of this department after been replacing six times due to the injuries; the curious thing is that the Madrilenian attacker hasn’t missed any game until now. Centre-back Ze Castro was replaced twice due to an injury case, and the other eight cases were starred by eight different players.

It all started on matchday 02 as Deportivo were visiting Valencia CF; the score was 3-1 at half-time and keeper Dani Aranzubia had to be replaced due to a gastric problem, but Depor barely noticed this problem, because substitute German Lux didn’t have too many interventions and the Galicians ended grabbing a point (3-3).

In the following matchday Deportivo were entertaining Getafe CF at the Riazor; the score was already 1-1 when Javier Camuñas had to replace Bruno Gama (50’). The Portuguese winger was dragging a hamstring injury. The change didn’t have an impact in the game as neither Gama nor Camuñas were decisive players in the meeting.

The first injury case of Riki came in matchday 04; Deportivo were visiting Granada CF and the striker had to be replaced after a head collision with centre back Mainz ;Nélson Oliveira replaced him (39’). This modification was positive for the Blanquiazul outfit, because the Portuguese attacker scored the goal for the final 1-1 draw and even netted a legal goal disallowed by the referee. After this game Riki wore a special mask protecting his broken nose.

For matchday 06, the injured man was Manuel Pablo as Deportivo were visiting Real Madrid (5-1). The Canarian right-back was replaced at half-time after picking a hamstring injury; the score was already 3-1 at that point in the game, so it didn’t affect the result. He was replaced by Laure.

Matchday 07 possibly represents the first case in which a substitution had a negative impact in the score; Depor were losing 1-2 at Rayo Vallecano and Oltra was ready to allow the entry of Salomão searching for the final push, but centre-back Ze Castro sustained an adductor injury and he was replaced by Ayoze (75’). Depor were unable to tie the game.

Matchday 10 witnessed a strange case as a substitute had to be replaced. RCD Mallorca were visiting the Riazor and Oliveira replaced Riki at minute 60, but during a play the Portuguese striker tried to chip the ball from outside the area and he got injured in the attempt –muscle- so he was replaced by Bodipo twenty-one minutes after entering into the pitch. Still, Depor clinched the three points (1-0).

One of the most notorious cases took place at matchday 12, Depor were hosting Levante UD at the Riazor and it was necessary to make two changes in a matter of fourteen minutes after both centre-backs fell down: Marchena (hamstring) and Ze Castro (muscle). The substitutions dismissed the options of Oltra in the second part as he needed a revulsive in the game, in the end Depor lost 0-2.

The next injury case took place on matchday 13; Depor were visiting San Mamés and the score was 1-1 when Roderick Miranda picked a muscle problem, the team was dragging with the previous injuries of Marchena and Ze Castro, so Pablo Insua debuted at Primera playing for the final eleven minutes. The Galician side was able to keep the draw.

Matchday 16 witnessed the second injury case of Riki; the score was 0-0 at the Riazor against Real Valladolid when the Madrilenian picked a muscle problem (81’). He had to be replaced by Camuñas, Oliveira was already on the pitch, but Depor were unable to break the deadlock. Third case in which Depor missed the victory after suffering an injury.

Riki fell down again in matchday 18 as Deportivo clinched their last win in the league: 1-0 Vs. Malaga CF. The ex-Getafe marksman was replaced by Oliveira after picking a new hit in the nose. He returned and two matchdays later was replaced again due to injury reasons, this time he picked an ankle sprain during the visit to CA Osasuna (2-1). Valerón claimed his spot, but the picture didn’t change and Depor lost that match.

It seemed the injuries were leaving Depor as there were no new cases in the next five games, but then Real Madrid visited the Riazor (matchday 25) and this time there was a double hit. First Sílvio suffered a concussion after a collision with Aranzubia (25’) and then Kaká picked a hamstring injury (57’), so Fernando Vázquez had to improvise with Álex and Jesús Vázquez playing I defensive positions, in the end the Madrilenians transformed the 1-0 into a 1-2, once again Depor lost a game in which the injuries changed the course of the meetings. This was the fifth case in which an injury affected a result.

The last case took place on the past matchday; Depor were hosting Rayo Vallecano and the Galician side was urgently needing the three points, but the Pichichi at the team, Riki, suffered his sixth injury of the season –adductor- and had to leave after just nineteen minutes. Salomão replaced him moving Pizzi to the centre of the attack, it was worthless and it turned to be a goalless game at the Riazor. It was the sixth case with an injury affecting a result of Deportivo.
