GALICIAN DERBY: HEROES, VILLAINS & ICONS

14 Mar 2013
There are big differences between Deportivo’s and Celta’s squads, but also some similarities. The main one is that both clubs have a big hero on the season and also a villain, plus an icon. It’s the story of Oubiña, Valerón, Aspas, Riki, Park & Oliveira.

Important clash for both Deportivo La Coruña and RC Celta at the Riazor, both sides need to win and all eyes will be upon the strikers at both teams. Precisely this department illustrates the similarities between both clubs, because there are huge differences between a Celta with a lot of B team members and a Depor built up with veterans and Jorge Mendes’ resources, but there also some common things.

And those common things are located at both offensive lines; both clubs are relying in a central attacker that’s completing a solid season, while their substitutes were new signings that haven’t matched the expectations. Another similarity is that both clubs are led by a veteran that’s considered as the leader of their respectives teams. These are the stories of the heroes, villains & icons of this Friday’s derby at the Riazor.

HEROES
Riki for Deportivo and Iago Aspas for Celta are the faces of their teams on this season. Both have netted ten goals in the liga tournament and represent the main threat ahead of the Galician derby. This is the eighth season for the Madrilenian attacker playing at Primera, while Aspas just debuted on the present campaign at the elite of Spanish football, actually he’s the top-scorer among the debutants at Liga BBVA.

Their stats demonstrate a similar behavior, but there’s a fact that marks a big difference: their companions. At Celta, Aspas is a solo-man; Los Olivicos have only scored 26 goals on this season, and the point is that Aspas has scored or assisted in 17 of them, which means the 65% of the total. At Depor, Riki is important, but he isn’t the only one as he has the company of Pizzi, who has contributed with seven goals plus six assists.

VILLIANS
The other side of the story is starred by Park Chu-Young and Nélson Oliveira, two young prospects that were saw as future stars in the game, both have a promising start on this liga tournament, but later they never matched the expectations and the fans are now looking at them as “loose cannons” and are among the most criticized players at their squads.

Portuguese Oliveira netted two goals within the first four matches in liga and later his performance got worse; it was commented that he needed a chance as a starter, and had that opportunity until last weekend at the Camp Nou, but he passed unnoticed. In the case of South Korean Park, he was the first player from his country to net a goal at Primera (matchday 5 Vs. Getafe), it was an important goal as it allowed to clinch the three points, but later he vanished and just scored again until matchday 12.

ICONS
Borja Oubiña and Juan Carlos Valerón are definitely the most admired players at both clubs and therefore their icons. The career of Oubiña has been more discrete, but he’s a player with great qualities. Both are among the players with the better passing ratios at their squads and their inspiration might be the key to define the derby.

On this season Oubiña has had a more stable role, he has only missed one game and is a fundamental piece at midfield, Valerón performs in a more advanced position, but has had a more intermittent role. He was a fixed starter with Oltra, then the arrival of Domingos left him out of the starting eleven, and Fernando Vázquez recovered him within the last matches.
