MIXED LUCK FOR THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS

28 Mar 2013
Abel Aguilar played 180 minutes in a matter of four days and his Colombia remains in the race for the World Cup. Pizzi and Sílvio didn’t have any participation with Portugal, while Bicho was eliminated with Spain’s U-17 squad.

Three players from the first team and one from the youth squads were involved in international action during this week. The one that was busier was Colombian Abel Aguilar, who played the full ninety minutes in the matches against Bolivia and Venezuela.

In the first game Colombia didn’t face any problem to bet Bolivia playing in Baranquilla (4-0); the midfielder performed in a more delayed function, so he barely was noticed during the game. The result extended the number of straight victories for Los Cafeteros to four.

This streak ended on Tuesday as Colombia was defeated by Venezuela playing in Puerto Ordaz (1-0). Ironically, Aguilar was more noticed in this match as he played in a more advanced position and having a couple of attempts to score, like a header in the first half that was deflected by a rival when the keeper was already defeated.

Despite the loss Colombia remain in the right track towards the FIFA World Cup 2014, being third at the standings in South America and having a comfortable four-point gap with chasers Chile and Venezuela. Aguilar returns today to A Coruña and should join the trainings on Friday.

Meanwhile, things continue to be negative for Depor’s players at Portugal. This time Nélson Oliveira wasn’t picked, but right-back Sílvio Azevedo and left winger Pizzi were included in the list for the visits to Israel and Azerbaijan. In the end the duo stayed out of both games.

And it wasn’t a good week for Portugal. Both games were understood as accessible meetings, but in the first they were totally surpassed by Israel. They were losing 3-1 by minute 70 and managed to score twice within the final twenty minutes, including a goal at the stoppage time, to end grabbing a point.

Neither easy was the game against Azerbaijan. Coentrão was doubtful throughout the week and Cristiano Ronaldo was suspended, so it was commented that both Pizzi and Sílvio would have a chance, but in the end the side defender of Real Madrid was fit enough to play, while coach Paulo Bento chose Wolfsburg’s Vieirinha as the replacement of Ronaldo.

The Portuguese outfit didn’t impress on the pitch and could only clinch the victory with two goals scored within the last half an hour and just when the rival was reduced to ten men. To make things worse Israel clinched a valuable 0-2 win visiting Northern Ireland, so both nations are the  runners-up in group F below Russia, the situation is pretty tight and the picture might be cleared in the visit of Israel to Portugal (Oct 11). After six meetings the players of Deportivo haven’t yet played with Portugal during the World Cup qualifiers. Pizzi and Sílvio join the trainings today.

BICHO ELIMINATED WITH SPAIN U-17
The U-17 team of Spain had a negative performance in the UEFA Elite Round and was eliminated from the European tournament after losing two of the three games. Juvenil A winger/playmaker Javier Fernández Abruñedo ‘Bicho’ had a discrete performance. He was a starter playing 50 minutes in the 2-3 loss against local team Croatia, then he didn’t play in the 2-1 win over Belgium and only disputed the final three minutes in the 2-3 loss against France.
