Squad news

Juan Carlos Valerón has been the symbol of the revival for Deportivo as the Galicians clinched seven points in the period and are now trying to leave the bottom of la liga. His two great passes in the derby were the peak for El Flaco.

Deportivo resurrected at the end of March clinching two straight victories that put the Galician team nearest to the dream of salvation. It was a good and necessary return and the team has now closed the gap to the salvation to 4 points with 9 games remaining.

And who’s better to lead this reaction than Juan Carlos Valerón, one of the captains at the squad and clearly the symbol of the Blanquiazul outfit, but the important thing is that several players are improving their performance lately, just when the team needed them the most.

The revival has been focused on several men raising their level and rediscovering their best form. Daniel Aranzubia was named Man of the Match (MOM) for the first two games of the month and Pizzi, Abel Aguilar (MOM v Mallorca), Silvio and Juan Dominguez have all turned in positive displays too. Marchena, Riki, Insua and Aythami also picked up points this month and this probes the collective improvement by the squad, for which a lot of credit must go to new coach, Fernando Vasquez.

But the player who continues to lead the charge towards the permanence is Valerón. El Flaco appeared in the points list against Rayo and Mallorca, but his finest hour came in his MOM display against eternal rivals Celta Vigo, where he rolled back the years to provide two crucial assists in the 3-1 victory at the Riazor. Although he didn’t receive any points against Barcelona, the standing ovation he received from the packed Camp Nou will live long in the memory.
