Depor’s defenders were scoreless on this season, and suddenly they have scored four times within the last three games. It’s a resource from past seasons that seems to be returning, though Marchena described it as an “accident”

Weird month for the defenders at Deportivo; by matchday 28 the Galician outfit was the only one at Primera División that didn’t have a defender scoring a goal in the league tournament, suddenly the defenders at the squad netted four goals in three games awakening memories from recent years.

Because in recent Primera tournaments the defenders were contributing with an important number of goals; the last season of Depor at Liga BBVA ended with the team scoring 31 goals, and 7 of those goals were netted by defenders (23% of the total) plus the one that was scored by Dani Aranzubia. In previous campaigns in was normal to see players as Albert Lopo, Diego Colotto or Filipe Luis scoring a respectful number of goals

And this contribution was vanished for the present season as the defenders of Deportivo remained scoreless within the first 27 matchdays in liga, though the exception was Manuel Pablo, who scored a wonderful goal in Copa Del Rey facing RCD Mallorca.

But within the last three games the defenders returned to the headlines as they scored four times;Sílvio Azevedo was the first one as a he scored in the derby against RC Celta through a beautiful volley from outside the area, in the clash visiting RCD Mallorca two defenders scored a goal, first it was Sílvio again and then Carlos Marchena.

And Marchena scored again in the last meeting against Real Zaragoza, match in which the contribution of the defenders could have been bigger if Aythami Artiles wouldn’t have failed when he hit the woodwork from close-range after collecting a lateral free-kick of Pizzi.

Still, for Marchena this phenomenon is an accident; as he commented on Tuesday, ”We still going up searching for the set-pieces, just like we always did, but perhaps we are searching better for the ball, perhaps it’s the faith that pulls us to reach the ball, these are streaks, a little of everything.”. About the fact that he scored goals in two straight liga matches for the first time in his career, he just commented that, ”It’s totally unusual, but it’s welcomed.”.

The last time Depor’s defenders scored goals in three straight Primera matches was at the end of 2009; at the time the Galicians also clinched three straight wins with Filipe Luis scoring against Getafe CF (2-0), Diego Colotto doing it against Atlético Madrid (2-1) and Albert Lopo netting the lonely goal against Racing Santander. If a Depor’s defender scores at the Ciutat de Valencia then it will be the first time in the history in which the defenders conquer a goal in four straight Primera matches.

So far the record of goals for the defenders at Deportivo La Coruña in one single Primera tournament is nine goals, mark reached on the season 2005/2006: Joan Capdevila Juanma Delgado (4) and Jorge Andrade (1).
