THE WAY TO SUCCEED: THE GOALS

18 Apr 2013
Deportivo have scored 13 goals within the last 4 liga encounters; it’s the first time in 17 years that this happens. The goals are helping Deportivo to leave the relegation zone, just in the season when the defense is failing.

Thirteen goals in four straight matchdays; it’s an unseen mark at Deportivo after seventeen years. The Galicians did it netting three goals against RC Celta, RCD Mallorca, Real Zaragoza and four against Levante UD. It’s tying the mark of the season 1995/96 as Toshack’s Depor scored thirteen goals facing Real Zaragoza (2-3), Rayo Vallecano (6-0), Real Madrid (3-0) and Real Oviedo (2-0).

These goals are helping Deportivo to leave the pit; and it’s that the goals are arriving just in the season when the defense is presenting its worst face. The Galicians, together with RCD Mallorca, are the worst defense at Primera after allowing 63 goals in 31 matches. It’s the worst mark in almost 60 years at the club.

Meanwhile, the team has scored 42 goals, it’s the best mark among the last ten places at the standings and the best mark at Primera for the club since the season 2008/09, time when the Blanquiazul outfit, coached by Lotina, scored 48 goals in 38 games.

The team is even responding without having the participation of Riki, the top-scorer at the team. In the last game in liga, Depor clinched a 0-4 win, the second highest away victory on the season at Primera División, and it did it without the Madrilenian, who was sidelined due to a muscle problem.

Apart from Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Valencia CF and Atlético Madrid, Deportivo, Real Betis and Real Sociedad are the only teams in liga with a duo that combined are netting 20 or more goals in the league. At the Andalusian club the combination is possible thanks to Rubén Castro and Jorge Molina (25); at the Basque club the couple is composed by Carlos Vela and Agirretxe (24), and at Depor the combination is the one between Riki and Pizzi (21).

A solid defense is always a powerful resource for a team that’s trying to stay alive in la liga, but at the same time a decent offense is a priority for an outfit that wants to win games in order to regain positions. Within the last decade only five teams suffered the relegation after netting 42 or more goals at Primera: Sporting Gijón (2011/12, 42 goals); Real Betis (2008/09, 51 goals), Real Zaragoza (2007/08, 50 goals), Real Valladolid (2003/04, 46 goals) and RC Celta (2003/ 04, 48 goals)
