One of the members of the Super Depor era, Julio Salinas, talked with a Basque paper and remembered the year that he spent at the Galicians club. He’s convinced that Deportivo will clinch the permanence on this season.

Julio Salinas Fernández is a former centre forward that played for FC Barcelona, and also for both Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo. He also represented Spain in three World Cups and two European Championships. He only played one season at the Galician team (1994-95), but was part of the squad that conquered the first title: the Copa Del Rey.

During the week he talked to newspaper Deia and remembered his arrival to Deportivo, “I arrived to Deportivo just after winning la liga with Barcelona thanks, in big part, to the penalty missed by Djukic against Valencia in the last matchdays of the season 1993/1994, and the adaptation to the team and the city was possible thanks to Voro, who helped me a lot after the World Cup in the United States.”

“I didn’t want to leave Barcelona and there was a promise from Johan Cruyff; it was that if we would have won a title then all the players would have stayed, but the promise wasn’t fulfilled and despite there was an option to return to Athletic, the option of Depor was the best one.” He added

About his stage at the Galician club, the Basque player said that, “I only spent a year there, in that famous Super Depor, but it was enough to end as the runner-up in liga and win the Copa, which meant the first title in the history of the club. What Lendoiro and the whole Deportivismo accomplished was incredible, they jumped until Primera and were able to compete at the same height than Real Madrid and Barcelona, always having worse economic possibilities. It was awesome. People aren’t entirely conscious of the merit of Deportivo on those years, it was incredible.”

Finally, Salinas is convinced that Depor will clinch the permanence on this season, “I lived an spectacular year there, in all the senses; I feel a special love for the club and the fans, so I hope, and I am convinced, that they will end clinching the salvation, though on Sunday they have a complicate game against Athletic.”
