Kaká seems to have earned a spot at the centre of the defense after the injury of Marchena, but Ze Castro is also hoping to regain a spot. Neither Aythami has a secure place in the schemes of Fernando Vázquez.

The injury of Carlos Marchena is an important casualty for Deportivo ahead of the last stretch in liga; the ex-Valencia man is the centre-back with more minutes in liga (1,852), now coach Fernando Vázquez has three options for two spots.

Aythami Artiles is the second central defender with more minutes at the squad (1,674) and he earned one of two spots at the same time than Depor chained a positive streak. Still, he doesn’t has a secure place at the starting lineup as his performance left some doubts, besides to his’ little fight’ with Vázquez when he was replaced against Real Zaragoza.

Ze Castro is the third centre-back in terms of more minutes (1,329); he was a starter in two of the first three games with Vázquez on board, but lost his spot after sustaining an adductor injury. The Portuguese man has participated in the positive streak of the team as he played in the last three games, though always entering from the bench.

Finally, Claudiano Bezerra ‘Kaka’ is the fourth centre-back with more minutes at the squad (327), which is normal as he landed at Depor during the winter window. Like the case of Ze Castro, he suffered an injury –hamstring strain- that cut his continuity at the team, but Vázquez chose him to be a starter against Athletic Bilbao, perhaps as the best choice to deal with Fernando Llorente.

Kaká talked during the week and said that the injury affected his continuity at Depor, “The injury was hard, because in all these years as a professional footballer it was the first serious injury in my life, besides it came at the moment when the team needed the players the most. I broke myself at midfield, but tried to avoid the goal in that play and was lucky enough to clear the danger.”

It will be interesting to realize what Fernando Vázquez will do ahead of the visit to Real Betis, a team with a different football than the Basques and a different reference in attack –Rubén Castro- In the first round game, Oltra chose to play with Roderick Miranda and Aythami, with the Portuguese replaced in the second half by Bodipo, a controversial change that for many people caused the 2-3 loss at the Riazor.
