JUVENIL A: SUMMARY OF THE SEASON

28 Apr 2013
Deportivo Juvenil A didn’t clinch the title at División de Honor, but at least it improved the results of the past season plus qualifying to the Copa Del Rey. Some of these players could be promoted to Fabril for next season.

Not a positive season for Deportivo Juvenil A; last Sunday the team, mainly composed by 18-year-old players, ended the season of 30 matches at División de Honor with a 1-0 victory visiting Montañeros CF. The result allowed the youngsters to end third at the Galician group, tied in points with Sporting Gijón Juvenil A and 18 points below champions Celta Juvenil A.

The big difference with nemesis Celta is leaving a bittersweet taste in the mouth of coach Jose Manuel Martinez 'Secho' in his third year at the team, this after the club has missed to win this league since the season 209/10, but at least the youngsters improved the results of the past campaign (ending fifth and out of Copa Del Rey).

The season is not totally over for Juvenil A as they still have to play the Copa Del Rey Juvenil after qualifying as one of the best third places; the name of the rival in the first round will be known after the final tournament between the seven group champions in Spain. The 16 teams that will play the Copa are; Celta, Depor, Sporting Gijón, Athletic Bilbao, Osasuna, Barcelona, Mallorca, Sevilla, Malaga, Almeria, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Las Palmas, Tenerife, Villarreal & Levante.

Despite the season is not over yet, it is possible to list some conclusions. First to all, the defense. Deportivo Juvenil A was the team with the best defense in the Galician group after only allowing 26 goals in 30 matches. Among the other six groups in Spain it’s the sixth best mark in the country, only below Real Madrid (16), UD Las Palmas (17), FC Barcelona (18), Sevilla CF (18) and Levante UD (22).

It is at defense where it’s possible to find some of the best gems at Depor’s squad, starting with goalie David Gómez, who completed his third season at the team; he’s ready for the promotion to Deportivo B. He’s a usual participant of the training sessions with José Sambade and the other keepers at the club (Aranzubia, Lux & Marc Martinez).

Among the defenders to emphasize the presence of centre-back Róber Suárez, who has been a habitual with Fabril during the Tercera season that’s about to end, also Enrique ‘Quique’ Fornos, another centre-back called to be a prospect for Depor B. Toni Insua and side defender Víctor García also had a positive year.

Midfield also presented youngsters living a solid season, starting with centre midfielder Gabi and playmaker Julio Delgado, only two of the three players at the team that disputed the 30 matches of the season at División de Honor. Sergio Pereira was also a pleasant surprise with his four goals in favour. Álex Sánchez and Angel are also advancing in their careers, passing unnoticed for the media, but the club has high hopes on both of them.

Juanpa and Bicho also had a decent season thanks to their skills and goals, the first one is a winger that scored eight times and the latter was a youngster moved from the left wing position to the playmaking function, in this campaign he scored seven goals in his first season at the team; he was picked by Spain’s U17 squad in several opportunities and, for the first time, he was picked to Fabril for today’s game Vs. SD Negreira.

There were also high expectations on Dani Iglesias, though he spent some time injured at the end of the season; still the striker played a few times with Depor B and contributed with 8 goals in 17 matches with Juvenil A. The other player that disputed the 30 games on the season was Chiño, a tall striker that was the Pichichi of the team with eleven goals in favour. Denis was the other striker with an important presence throughout the season scoring 7 goals in 27 matches.

Not impressive was the season for the foreign players, South Korean Yun played 20 games, but only 4 as a starter. Venezuelan attacker Eloy only played for seven minutes and left the club, while his compatriot, centre-back Gabriel, only played once after joining the team within the last weeks. Also centre midfielder Jorge De Dios had a negative year, he still sidelined after suffering a serious injury on last season.

It still to be decided what will happen with many of these players ahead of next season, some could stay for another year, but other need the promotion to Depor B or instead to end loaned or released. Big part of the decision depends on the league where Fabril will play on next year. The continuity of the B squad at Tercera would open the doors to several of these prospects, but a promotion to Segunda B could change the plans.
