SOLID NUMBERS WITH FERNANDO VÁZQUEZ

08 May 2013
The arrival of Fernando Vázquez has kept the offensive potential, but the important thing is that the defense is more solid. These two simply, but important aspects, have allowed Deportivo to spend the last seven matchdays undefeated.

Deportivo have only allowed four goals within the last four matches in la liga clinching two clean sheets within the period (against Levante UD & Atlético Madrid). Since the arrival of new coach Fernando Vázquez the Galician team has only allowed eleven goals in fourteen matches, this means a decrease in the average of allowed goals going from 2.10 to 1.95.

Now, Depor is no longer the team in la liga with more goals allowed, because RCD Mallorca has leaked 68 against the 65 of the Galicians. The improvement in defense has been possible no matter the casualty of Carlos Marchena, a veteran considered to be the leader of the defensive line.

At the same time, the Blanquiazul outfit is keeping the effectiveness in attack, with Vázquez on board the team has scored seventeen goals in fourteen matches. The average of 1.21 goals per match is slightly better compared to the 1.17 had with Oltra and Domingos Paciência.

Actually, for the first time in the history, Deportivo spent four straight Primera matchdays scoring three or more goals. It happened between matchdays 28 & 31: 3-1 Vs. RC Celta, 3-2 at RCD Mallorca, 3-2 Vs. Real Zaragoza & 4-0 at Levante UD.

This new balance is the main explanation to the fact that Deportivo have spent the last seven matchdays without suffering a defeat, exactly what the team missed in the previous stages with Oltra and Domingos Paciência.

And Vázquez did this without making big changes at the lineup; compared to his predecessors he barely made two changes in the 4-2-3-1 scheme, allowing the entry of Sílvio Azevedo at the left side of the defense while Juan Dominguez was claiming a spot at midfield. So, beyond tactical movements the Galician trainer has changed the mentality of the players, bringing the needed confidence to face the last stretch of the tournament.
