THE SOLID YEAR OF RIKI

17 May 2013
Despite Deportivo’s problems to survive in la liga, this has been the best year of Riki as a footballer. Never before he has scored so many goals at Primera. Neither has played more games nor has spent so many minutes on the pitch.

The best year of Iván Sánchez Rico Soto ‘Riki’ after a decade in the game; the Madrilenian striker is without doubt the key in the attacking zone of Deportivo being the top-scorer at the team adding thirteen goals to his tally. It’s his best mark at the top-flight and he only scored more at Real Madrid Castilla, though playing at Segunda División B (18, 2003/04).

He’s also breaking his personal marks in terms of games and minutes in one single league tournament. He already made 33 appearances on the league campaign –all of them as a starter- tying the mark of the Primera season 2006/07, so he only needs one more to establish a new personal mark.

What was already broken was his personal record regarding the number of minutes in one single Primera season. He already played for 2,819 minutes, well beyond the 2,498 completed with Getafe CF during the Primera campaign 2005/06. So, this 32-year-old marksman seems to be living a second youth.

And big part of it has to do with the fact that the injuries are no longer bothering him; on past years it was common to see Riki out for injury reasons, last season the problem was smaller, but still he missed thirteen matches due injury cases, meanwhile on the preset campaign he has only skipped three matches.

Riki during Wednesday’s training
Maybe he was just lucky, as early on the season he suffered two nose fractures that almost left him on the sidelines, but he managed to play the games wearing a special mask. Actually, he was doubtful ahead of the upcoming clash against RCD Espanyol, this due to a muscle problem and as he skipped the first trainings on the week. But on Wednesday he explained that he will be ready for the game, “I’m fine; I was feeling a little tired, but I don’t think there will be any problem ahead of Sunday. There was little issue and the best thing to do was to not take any risk, but I should join the trainings tomorrow. “

And Deportivo need Riki performing at his best version ahead of the last three games in the calendar, this in order to escape relegation; for the moment the player want to focus on the clash against RCD Espanyol, “I believe that, if we don’t achieve the victory in this match, then things will be pretty complicated in order to stay at Primera División, so the only thing in our heads is the victory; we are going out for everything since the kick-off.”
