The match against Real Sociedad is a final to decide the permanence and there’s a feeling of Déjà vu surrounding Deportivo as there are several similarities to the game played against Valencia CF two years ago.

If there’s a feeling describing the Deportivismo on this week it is nervousness. The potential of the rival, currently fighting for the Champions League, and the fact that Depor need the victory is breaking the heads of the fans ahead of Saturday’s crucial meeting.

Besides, the fans are feeling that they are revisiting the nightmare lived two years ago. And it’s that there are a lot of similarities with the dramatic end of the season 2010/11, time when Depor were unable to obtain a positive result as Valencia CF were visiting the Riazor.

At the time the Galicians were living a similar scenario to the present season as they were 17th at the standings, tied in points with Getafe CF (43) and only point above Real Zaragoza. Two of the relegation spots were already decided –Hércules CF and Almeria UD- and the Galicians were needing a victory at home to secure the permanence.

In the end they only would needed a draw as RCD Mallorca, one point above, lost in their home meeting against Atlético Madrid (3-4), but Lotina’s Depor was a crippled team unable to overcome the early goal of the Valencians, team that didn’t make any sacrifice in the game as it was playing for nothing, in the end Los Blanquiazules lost 0-2 and ended at Segunda as Real Zaragoza won their match (1-2 at Levante UD).

The suffering two years ago

It is exactly what the fans fear to live again, because the current situation is practically the same, with Deportivo living at the 17th position only having one more point compared to the first team in relegation. Perhaps the biggest difference is that, this time, the rival is playing for a lot of things as Real Sociedad still has options of playing the UEFA Champions League. The thorn of two years ago still there, and it still haunting Deportivo’s fans.
