FABRIL: ONE STEP CLOSER TO SEGUNDA B

18 Jun 2013
Depor B are the only 4th place that still alive in the quest to reach Segunda División B; if they beat CD El Palo in the last round, then the B team of Deportivo will play for the tenth time at the third level of the Spanish football league system.

After a sad season for the first team, the B squad of Deportivo La Coruña is bringing back the hope to the fans as the youngsters are close to achieve the promotion to Segunda División B.  Fabril have played nine times at the third level of the Spanish football, eight of them since the team officially became Deportivo B. The last time Fabril played on that league was on the season 2010/11.

It has been a remarkable season for Deportivo B in an unusually strong Galician group of Tercera División. There were many candidates to end at the playoff positions and the team coached by José Luis Devesa managed to sneak away ending fourth.

The Galician group is so strong that’s the only one among the 18 groups in the league that still have the option of promoting the four teams that entered into the playoff round. Racing Club Ferrol already secured the promotion, while RC Celta B and SD Compostela are in the same situation than Fabril: only needing one more round to clinch the gold. Actually, Depor B are the only fourth place that still alive in the playoffs.

Only eighteen clubs still alive for the remaining nine spots at Segunda B, the other nine were already achieved by the winners of the group champions round. In order to clinch the promotion Deportivo B must eliminate CD El Palo, team that was the winner of group 9 (Andalusia & Melilla).

El Palo is a team from the neighborhood with the same name located in the city of Malaga. They only lost four games in the regular season, but didn’t pass the round of the champions after falling against Burgos CF (aggregate score 2-3). So, in order to reach this final round they had to eliminate FC Jumilla (4th place of the Murcian group) with a devastating 7-2 in the aggregate score.

Despite been a small club, CD El Palo –founded in 1971- is a well-organized club; they have a complete academy that goes from 4-year-old players (Pelusas) to the B team competing at the Regional Preferente league.  They have a modern complex known as Estadio Nuevo San Ignacio inaugurated in 2011, which consists of three football pitches, a playground for kids and a pub.

The first-leg will be played this Sunday at the Riazor, something that’s a novelty and that was decided by the players themselves, while the returning game is scheduled for June 30 at Estadio Nuevo San Ignacio (1,000 spectators). The pitch is artificial turf, so once gain Deportivo B are going to play in these conditions, just as it happened before against UE Cornellà and CD Tuilla.
