Deportivo return to the training pitch one month after suffering the relegation to Segunda División. Coach Fernando Vázquez begins the first stage of the pre-season with only sixteen players. The team will be training at Abegondo.

The first stage of Deportivo’s pre-season begins today. The players will pass a series of medical tests during the morning and in the afternoon they will have the first training session at Abegondo. There will be another training session on Saturday and later the group will rest during Sunday.

Depor’s first team will be working at Abegondo until July 14, then the group will begin the second stage as the players will travel to the city of Monforte de Lemos in order to make a mini-stage there. It will also coincide with the first four friendly matches on the pre-season.

The first team will return on July 26 to A Coruña and will continue training at Abegondo and playing other three friendly games, two of them in Galicia and another in Portugal. More friendly matches will be scheduled for the last stretch of the pre-season, including the Teresa Herrera tournament, which should mark the end of the pre-season stage.

But what’s calling the attention in the first stage of the pre-season that begins today is the low number of players that will be at the first team, because only fifteen men from the first team have been picked for the medical test and the first training. Recently signed keeper German Lux is the last name that joined the list.

The players from Fabril that will make the pre-season will join the team until the second stage beginning on July 15, because they ended the season last weekend and the coaching staff wants to give them at least fifteen days off. The only exception is playmaker Jesús Cañizares ‘Cañi’, the only signing from Depor B made until this point. He will join the trainings during the afternoon’s session raising the number of players to sixteen.

The club has been hermetic about the list of players from Fabril that will make the pre-season with the first team. Coach Fernando Vázquez has only stated that seven or eight youngsters will be picked and that four or five of them will be promoted on a permanent basis. Still, he has stated in several opportunities that centre-back Pablo Insua will be one of them, and on Wednesday he also revealed that Dani Iglesias was going to be part of the stage, but he wasn’t included in the list for the first day.

Picked players for today’s session: Aranzubia, Lux, Laure, Manuel Pablo, Ayoze, Aythami, Alex Bergantiños, Seoane, Juan Carlos, Juan Dominguez, Bruno Gama, Cañi, Paulo Assunção, Zé Castro, Stefan Deák & Rochela.
