Up to five players are searching for an exit from Deportivo; Ze Castro, Aranzubia and Assunção are pushed to the door out due to their unaffordable wages, while Rochela and Seoane don’t have too many options with Fernando Vázquez.

It sounds like an irony, but there’s no room at Deportivo for some of the players that are training with the first team. An irony because there are only 17 players training in the first phase of the pre-season, one of them is a B squad player that will return to Fabril for the regular season (Cañi).

There are two factors causing this curious situation: the financial problems at the club and the disproportion at the first squad. The relegation and the financial problems with Deportivo passing through an administration process are forcing president Lendoiro to cut the budget in half, therefore some of the players’ wages are now unaffordable.

Three players are affected by this situation: centre-back Ze Castro, keeper Daniel Aranzubia and centre midfielder Paulo Assunção.  Aranzubia is at Depor since 2008 and could be one of the captain for the new season, but the club sees with good eyes his exit after the renewal of German Lux and the ex-Athletic man earns around the million Euros. It’s more convenient to give the spot of second keeper to Marc Martinez, who’s coming from Fabril having a lower salary, a normal thing in any B squad member.

For the moment Aranzubia hasn’t said anything about what his intentions are, he was linked with a move to some Primera clubs, including Valencia CF, but Los Ches have first to get rid of Diego Alves, while Depor’s keeper has to cancel his contract with the Galician outfit.

Ze Castro is the second player on this list; his case is a little different as the defender would love to stay at Deportivo despite the relegation. The reason is that he feels identified with the club and is pretty comfortable living in A Coruña, the problem is that he was told that his wages are unaffordable and his agent has stated that he would have to leave in order to not be a problem.

The Portuguese defender has been linked with Elche CF at Primera and Sporting Braga, while there are rumours of some interest in Turkey. Lendoiro talked of the cases with Aranzubia and Ze Castro during the presentation of Kaká, “Yes they have requested for an exit and for the moment we are seeing what to do. Their agents are working on this.”

Depor’s president also explained the case with Assunção, the third player on the list, “We hope to solve the issue as soon as possible, but we are pending to talk to his agent.”. But a new twist occurred on Thursday as the Brazilian player showed up at Abegondo and completed his first training on the pre-season.

Later the midfielder talked to the media and said that he won’t have problem if he has to stay at Depor, ”I’m a little tired, but it’s normal as it was the first training.  I’m calm. I'm happy here and have no problem in playing at Segunda. My family is adapted, my kids are playing here [his two sons played at the academy during last season]." In any case it’s improbable that the Brazilian will stay at Depor.

Then, there are two players at the door out due to the disproportion at the first squad: Diego Seoane and David Rochela. It turns out that, of the 17 players currently training at the first team, there are no strikers,  nine are defenders, and five of them are centre-backs. So, despite the low number there’s overbooking in some positions.

Fernando Vázquez stated last week that both players will hardly make it into the final team for the Segunda season, “In the beginning it would be difficult to see them having a spot at the team; I’m talking of the cases with Rochela and Seoane, it would be difficult to see them finding a spot. Kaká is joining us, so the position will be well covered and the presence of Rochela would be more complicated.” He said.

It’s hard to predict what will happen with both ex-Fabril players. They will continue training with the team during the stage in Monforte de Lemos and it seems improbable that they will leave soon, because there’s no offer for them and the club would have to offer the duo to other Segunda clubs.  In the case of Rochela he could return to Israel after playing there within the last five months of the season.
